Abstract

A personal alarm comprises an activator, 10, fitting across the palm of the user with a finger activated switch, 12, and a transmitter, 21, which sends a GPS position of the user when operated. The transmitter may only be operated when the switch is activated. The device may be battery powered, 23, for which a tester may be provided. The GPS position of the user may be sent by the transmitter continuously. The finger activated switch may comprise at least two switches which may be recessed, 13A-D. The transmitter may be provided in a housing separate to or with the activator, or in a housing within the activator housing. The activator may be located on a palm band, 11, which may be connected to the transmitter on the users wrist. The device may include an indicator, e.g. a vibrator, 40, to inform the user that their message has been received.

Description

TITLE: Alarm Device The present invention relates to an alaim device.
It is known to provide alarms which when activated by the user sends a SMS message over a mobile phone network to notitt a third party that the user needs assistance. Such known alarms normally needs to be activated by a person using move their hand to a location where an activator is located, e.g. in a pocket or on a wrist band, or on a necklace.
If the user is being assaulted with their arm movement restrained, or perhaps has a severe medical condition, it may not be possible for the user to activate the alarm.
The invention seeks to provide a solution to this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided an alarm device comprising: a) an activator for fitment across the palm of a user, said activator having a finger activated switch operated by clenching at least one fmger towards the palm of the user, and b) a transmitter adapted to send through a mobile network a GPS position of the user when the activator is operated.
Preferably the transmitter is operated only when the finger activate switch is activated.
Preferably the alarm device is powered by a battery. Preferably a battery tester is provided.
Preferably the transmitter sends a GPS position of the user when the activator is operated and continuously thereafter until any power source is drained.
Preferably the finger operated switch includes at least two switches and any one operated by a finger activates the alarm. Preferably there are four switch one for each finger.
Preferably finger operated switch in recess to prevent accidental operation.
The transmitter may be provided in a housing with the activator or a in a separate housing, e.g. on the wrist.
The activator may be on a palm band. The palm band may be connected to the transmitter on a wrist to prevent it sliding off the fingers.
Preferably the alarm device includes an indicator such as a vibrator activated by a person sending a signal e.g. by SMS to the transmitter so the user knows a message has been received by a remote person.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a view of a device prior to being worn, Figure 2 shows a view of the device being worn on a hand, and Figure 3 shows a schematic system showing use of the alarm.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, there is shown an alarm device 1.
Alarm device 1 has an activator 10 for fitment across the palm of a user. Activator 10 includes an adjustable palm band 11 carrying a finger activated switch 12 operated by clenching at least one finger towards the palm of the user. Switch 12 has four recessed button switch 13A,13B,13C13D which can be pressed by clenching the four fingers towards respective switches 13A,13B,13C,13D so that the ends of the fmgers press the button switches. Switch 12, and hence the activator 10, is operated when any one or more buttons are pressed. The button switches are recessed to prevent accidental operation, e.g. when holding an object in the palm of the hand.
A transmitter 21 is provided in a separate wrist housing 20. Housing 20 is secured to the wrist by an adjustable strap 22. Transmitter 21 is adapted to send a SMS message through a mobile network giving a (liPS position of the user when the activator lOis operated. Transmitter 2lis operated only when the finger activated switch is activated.
Alarm device 1 is powered by a battery 23. Preferably a battery tester is provided (not shown) to indicate the battery has enough power to drive the transmitter 21.
The palm band Ills connected to the housing 20 on the wrist by a tie 30 to prevent the palm band sliding off the fingers.
Referring to Figure 3 there is shown a schematic circuit. Transmitter 21 is connected to battery 23 through the activator 10. Transmitter 21 includes a circuit to send a SMS message giving a GPS position to a nominated remote mobile telephone X. Transmitter 21 may also receive a message from mobile telephone X and operate a vibrator 40 in housing 20.
In use, if a wearer of the alarm device 1 should need assistance, the wearer can operate the activator 10 by clenching the fingers towards the palm of the hand and operate at least one button 1 3A, 138, 13C, 13D. This will cause the transmitter to send the GPS position of the wearer to the nominated mobile telephone X. The operator of the telephone X will be able to act on this message, e.g. by sending the police or ambulance to the GPS position. The operator of the telephone X can send a SMS message to the device 1 which will activate the vibrator, so letting the wearer know that operator will be acting on the message.
Preferably the transmitter sends a GPS position of the user when the activator is operated and continuously thereafter until any power source is drained. This will keep the operator updated with any changes to the wearer's position.
The activator can be operated even if the arms of the wearer are restrained or unmov able.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above. For example the transmitter coul4 be provided in the same housing the activator 10 on the hand.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
