Description

A VEHICLE
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates to a vehicle and particularly, but not exclusively, to a vehicle having apparatus for information transfer and to an apparatus for information transfer in a vehicle.
BACKGROUND
Information is often conveyed to a vehicle occupant using a display, for example an LCD display. Often displays have multiple modes or options through which the displayed information may be modified or changed. However, the display is normally interrupted either fully or partially during the modification or changing of the information. For example, in a vehicle having a display for displaying information such as directional information to inform the driver, the directional information is interrupted to configure the display to provide new directional information. This is particularly disadvantageous when the interrupted original information contains directions relevant to the current location of the vehicle.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Aspects of the invention relate to a vehicle and to an apparatus for a vehicle as claimed in the appended claims.
According to an aspect of the invention there is provided a vehicle comprising: a first display portion associated with a driver of the vehicle and arranged to display first information; a second display portion associated with a passenger of the vehicle and arranged to display second information; a transfer means for transferring: the first information displayed on the first display portion to the second display portion; or the second information displayed on the second display portion to the first display portion.
According to an aspect of the invention there is provided a vehicle comprising: a first display portion associated with a first occupant region of the vehicle and arranged to display first information visible to an occupant in said first occupant region; a second display portion associated with a second occupant region of the vehicle and arranged to display second information visible to an occupant in said second occupant region; and a transfer means to transfer: the first information displayed on the first display portion to the second display portion; and/or the second information displayed on the second display portion to the first display portion.
The first and second occupant regions may be selected from a group consisting of: a driving seat of the vehicle; and one or more passenger seats of the vehicle.
In embodiments of the invention where the driving seat is occupied by a driver of the vehicle, the display portion not associated with the driving seat is not readily viewable by the driver while the driver occupies the driving seat and is driving the vehicle.
Aspects of the invention therefore provide the advantage that vehicle occupants may pass information displayed on display portions associated with themselves to other occupants without interrupting the information displayed to those other occupants.
In embodiments of the invention, the second information is not readily viewable by the driver while the driver is driving the vehicle.
In embodiments of the invention the second information displayed on the second display portion is configurable so that a passenger of the vehicle can configure the second information without interrupting the first information displayed on the first display portion.
This is advantageous because the act of configuring information can be performed without distracting the driver through not having to configure the information on or using the display portion associated with the driving seat occupied by the driver.
In embodiments of the invention the first display portion and the second display portion are portions of a screen. The screen may be an elongate screen extending from a first area of the vehicle proximate to the driver to a second area of the vehicle not proximate to the driver. By "not proximate to the driver" is meant that the display, or its information, is not readily visible to the driver, and not being readily visible means not while the drivei adopts a normal driving position. A normal driving position of the driver does not exclude the driver turning the head to view objects inside the vehicle, but does exclude contortions that a careful driver would never usually make during normal driving of a vehicle. Alternatively, the screen may be a bi-directional screen having a first display direction for viewing the first display portion and a second display direction for viewing the second display portion.
These embodiments are advantageous because a single screen can be split into more than one portion where each portion displays information only relevant to vehicle occupants that can see that portion of the screen.
In embodiments of the invention, the second information comprises satellite navigation information so that the passenger can configure a satellite navigation system of the vehicle.
In embodiments of the invention, the second information is configurable while the driver is driving the vehicle.
Advantageously embodiments of the invention therefore permit the satellite navigation system to be updated, for example to a new heading, while the vehicle is moving because the driver is not distracted by the passenger of the vehicle using the second display portion to configure the satellite navigation. Conversely the driver may be distracted if the passenger of the vehicle uses the display portion associated with the driving seat which the driver occupies, to update the satellite navigation.
In embodiments of the invention, the transfer means comprises a wireless connection for wirelessly transmitting data from the second display portion to the first display portion.
In embodiments of the invention, the transfer means comprises a wired connection for transmitting data from the second display portion to the first display portion.
In embodiments of the invention, the transfer means comprises an optical connection for optically transmitting data from the second display portion to the first display portion.
In embodiments of the invention, the transfer means comprises a display driver for moving the second information from the second display portion to the first display portion.
In embodiments of the invention, the apparatus comprises an accept means for the driver to accept or reject the transfer of the second information to the first display portion.
By way of further explanation, if the driver accepts the transfer of the second information then salient data may be extracted from said second infoimation and transfeired to the vehicle system associated therewith and used to inform the operation of the associated vehicle system.
For example! if the driver accepts second information which comprises satellite navigation information, then salient data such as a new way-point, heading or vehicle destination is extracted from the second information and parsed to the vehicle satellite navigation system.
In this manner the satellite navigation system of the vehicle can be reconfigured based on second information received form another occupant of the vehicle as accepted by the driver.
This provides the advantage of peimitting the drivei to accept oi leject information that has been filteied by the passenger such that if the driver accepts the second information, the first display portion is updated to display the second information.
Accordingly, the first display poition may be updated to display the second infoimation once the corresponding vehicle system has been updated in dependence on said second information.
According to an aspect of the invention there is provided an independent apparatus for a vehicle, the apparatus complising: a first display portion associated with a driver of the vehicle and arranged to display first information; a second display poition associated with a passenger of the vehicle and arranged to display second information; a transfer means for transferring: the first information displayed on the first display portion to the second display portion; or the second information displayed on the second display portion to the first display portion.
Within the scope of this application it is expressly intended that the various aspects, embodiments, examples and alternatives set out in the preceding paragraphs, in the claims and/or in the following description and diawings, and in particular the individual features thereof, may be taken independently or in any combination. Features described in connection with one embodiment are applicable to all embodiments, unless such features are incompatible.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES
One or more embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a plan view of a vehicle according to an embodiment of the invention; Figure 2 shows an inside perspective view of a vehicle according to an embodiment of the invention; Figure 3 shows a plan view of a vehicle according to an embodiment of the invention; Figure 4 shows an inside perspective view of a vehicle according to an embodiment of the invention; Figure 5 shows an inside perspective view of a vehicle according to an embodiment of the invention; Figure 6 shows an inside perspective view of a vehicle according to an embodiment of the invention; and Figure 7 shows an apparatus according to an embodiment of the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Figure 1 illustrates vehicle 10 according to an embodiment of the invention. The vehicle comprises a first display portion 12, a second display portion 14 and a transfer means (216, Figure 7). The first display portion 12 displays first information 18 to the driver of the vehicle and the second display portion 14 displays second information 20 to a passenger of the vehicle. Therefore, the first display portion is to be known as being associated with the driver of the vehicle because it is visible to the driver and its informational contents are discernible to the driver. The second display portion is to be known as being associated with a passenger of the vehicle. This is because, in a normal driving scenario where the driver is sat in the expected upright driving position and looking forward, the second display portion 14 does not display information to the driver of the vehicle, because it is physically not visible to the driver in normal conditions, and is therefore not associated with the driver of the vehicle. Indeed, information displayed on the second display may not be relevant to the driver and the driver may not want or need to see that information. It should be appreciated that passengers, as well as the driver, of the vehicle may be able to view the first display portion 12 and the first information 18, such that the first display portion may be considered to be associated with the driver and the passenger of the vehicle, but it is associated with the driver because it is visible, and its information is discernible, to him or her..
The information displayed on the display portions 12. 14 need not be the same. Means may be provided whereby vehicle occupants may transfer second information 20 to other vehicle occupants. In the following examples, the passengers of the vehicle may transfer the second information 20 to the driver of the vehicle. This enables the driver to concentrate on driving the vehicle while the passengers select information for transfer. For example, the passenger may select a music track, or playlist, etc., displayed on the second display portion 14 before transferring track information to the driver of the vehicle by displaying it on first display portion 12.
In embodiments of the invention, the second information 20 is configurable so that a passenger of the vehicle can configure the second information 20 without interrupting the first information 18 displayed on the first display portion 12. For example, the second information 20 may relate to satellite navigation information that may be selected and/or configured by the passenger before the information is transferred to the driver.
In an embodiment of the invention, the transfer means 216 (see Figure 7) comprises a display driver coupled to the first and second display portions 12, 14, and arranged to display different data on the first and second display portions 12, 14. In this respect, it should be understood that the display portions may therefore be part of, or considered as, a single display in two parts. However, it should also be noted that the display portions may be entirely separate displays, driven by independent display drivers, but coupled by the transfer means 216. The transfer means may be physically coupled, for example using electrical wires or optical cables, or may be wirelessly coupled.
Figure 1 illustrates the viewing properties of the first and second display portions 12, 14. In the example shown, the first display portion 12 has a viewing angle 32 that encompasses the driving seat 33 of the vehicle so that information displayed on the first display portion 12 is displayed to the driver (not shown) sitting in the driving seat 33. The second display portion 14 has a viewing angle 34 that does not encompass the driving seat 33 so that information displayed on the second display portion 14 is not displayed to the driver. As briefly mentioned above, the driver could, of course, lean toward the back of the vehicle to see the information displayed on the second display portion 14 but such a position of the driver is not "normal" during driving of the vehicle.
The vehicle as exemplified in Figure 1 therefore permits passengers of the vehicle 10, sitting in the rear seats 35 to view andlor configure information on or using the second display portion 14 without interrupting the driver. The information can be selectively transferred to the first display portion 12, which is viewable to the driver.
The transfer of information using the transfer means can be initiated by a button or similar provided on or near to the second display portion 14. For example, if the second display portion 14 is a touch screen, a touch button can be provided on the screen and labelled transfer to driver', for example. Similarly, an accept means in the form of a button or similar can be used to permit the driver to accept or reject information being transferred to the first display portion 12. Therefore, similar to the second display portion 14, if the first display portion 12 is a touch screen, a touch button can be provided on the screen and labelled accept information', for example. For each of the transfer and accept controls/buttons, it should be noted that the invention is not limited to use of a button per se and it will be appreciated by the skilled person that other means of initiating and accepting transfer are within the scope of the invention. For example, each of the display portions may comprise a touch screen compatible with gestures for initiating the relevant action. In an example embodiment, a swipe gesture is used to initiate transfer from the second display portion when the user swipes their finger toward a predefined region of the display portion. Similarly, the driver who is subsequently, or otherwise, expected to accept or reject the incoming information, may be provided with a display portion comprising a touch screen display. The driver can then accept or reject information using a screen gesture, for example a pinch, or zoom, or swipe motion. This may be advantageous because such gestures are easy for the driver to perform whilst driving the vehicle.
Figure 2 shows a vehicle 10' having a first display portion 12' proximate to the driver and viewable by the driver, and a second display portion 14' not viewable by the driver. Similar to Figure 1, in embodiments of the invention, the display portions 12', 14' of Figure 2 are part of a centre console 36 comprising other vehicle controls such as a gear shifter 38. Figure 2 also illustrates a transfer button 40 for transferring information and an accept button 42 for accepting or rejecting transferred information as described above.
Figure 3 shows a vehicle 10". The vehicle 10" comprises the features of the vehicle described in relation to Figures 1 and 2 but differs in the configuration of the display portions.
The apparatus 10" comprises a bi-directional display having a first display portion 12" with a viewing angle 32" encompassing the driving seat 33" and a second display portion 14" with a viewing angle 34" not encompassing the driving seat. It may be bi-directional by any means, for example by having a crease down the middle so that one half the screen displays with the viewing angle 32" and the other half displays with the viewing angle 34", or it may be that the first and second informations are overlaid, such as in 3 dimensional images or similar, with a directional filter over the composite screen 12/14" so that the first information is visible when viewed from the direction of viewing angle 32" and the second information is visible when viewed from the direction of viewing angle 34".
Figure 4 shows a vehicle 10". The vehicle 10" comprises the features of the vehicle described in relation to Figures 1 to 3 but differs in the configuration of the display portions.
The vehicle 10" comprises an elongate single display panel 50 comprising the first and second display portions 12", 14" for displaying first and second information 18", 20" respectively. The elongate display 50 therefore provides for the first display portion 12" to be in the region of the driver (not shown) sitting in the driving seat 33 and for the second display portion 14" to be in a different region so that the second information 20" is not visible to and does not distract the driver.
The elongate display 50 can comprise other display portions 52 for displaying intormation.
For example, the other portions may display information relevant to the running of the vehicle or media systems thereof. The other portions may also be used to animate the information transfer from the second display portion 14" to the first display portion 12".
In embodiments of the invention, the vehicle 10" comprises a third display portion 15 as shown in Figure 5 with the first and second display portions 12", 14" as described. In an example embodiment, the third display 15 comprises a driver information screen 15 as used to provide salient information to the driver of the vehicle. The third display portion may be used to display the transferred information, as hereinbefore described, or an option to accept or reject the incoming information. For example, a simple question such as "Accept incoming information?" can be displayed on the third display. The accept or reject control/buttons could be disposed on or near to the steering wheel 60 of the vehicle 10".
Although the foregoing examples relate to the transfer of information from the passenger to the driver, in embodiments of the invention, a driver may transfer information to the passenger. Such a system may be useful, for example, in a chauffeur driven vehicle where the chauffeur may wish to transfer information to the passengers. It should be appreciated therefore that the foregoing examples and figures are applicable to embodiments of the invention where the driver transfers information to the passengers by swapping reference to the first and second display portions. Similarly, the foregoing examples are applicable to passenger to passenger transfer of information such that a first passenger may transfer information from a display portion associated with a first passenger to a display portion associated with a second passenger.
In embodiments of the invention, as shown in Figure 6, the vehicle 110 comprises a separate mobile device 111, for example a smartphone. In these embodiments, the second display portion 114 is provided by all or part of the display of the smartphone 111, whereby a passenger 115 may transfer information from the second display portion 114 on the smartphone to the first display portion 112 for displaying the information to the driver (not shown). The smartphone may be connected to the transfer means (as previously described and not shown in Figure 6) via, for example, Bluetooth®, or Wi-Fi, or a wired connection.
The transfer means may therefore be the display driver for the first display portion 112, which could, for example, be a display screen installed in the vehicle. In an example embodiment where the vehicle comprises the mobile device, gestures may be used as hereinbefore described to initiate transfer of data to the first display portion.
As shown in Figure 7, embodiments of the invention also relate to an independent apparatus 210 comprising a first display portion 212, a second display portion 214 and a transfer means 216. The apparatus is installable in a vehicle so that the first display portion 212 is associated with a driver of the vehicle and displays first information 218, and the second display portion 214 is associated with a passenger of the vehicle and displays second information 220.
Where a gesture is used to transfer information between more than two displays, in some embodiments of the invention, the direction of the gesture is used to determine the transfer of the information. For example, where a first display portion is associated with a driver, a second display portion is associated with a front seat passenger, and a third display portion is associated with a rear seat passenger, a swipe gesture on or in relation to the first display portion in the direction of the front seat passenger (for example left to right or right to left) will initiate transfer of information to the second display portion. Similarly, a swipe gesture in the direction of the rear seat passenger (for example up to down or down to up) will initiate transfer of information to the third display portion.
Further aspects of the present invention are outlined in the followed series of numbered paragraphs: 1. A vehicle comprising: a first display portion associated with a first occupant region of the vehicle and arranged to display first information visible to an occupant in said first occupant region; a second display portion associated with a second occupant region of the vehicle and arranged to display second information visible to an occupant in said second occupant region; an interface to transfer: the first information displayed on the first display portion to the second display portion; and/or the second information displayed on the second display portion to the first display portion.
2. The vehicle of paragraph 1, wherein the first and second occupant regions are selected from a group consisting of: a driving seat of the vehicle; and one or more passenger seats of the vehicle.
