Abstract

System and method for monitoring the health of modules in a web-based collaboration environment are disclosed. The health monitoring system 120 identifies at least one module 108,195,196, where each module provides one or more services to clients via one or more host servers 105. In particular, the services are redundantly accessible from more than one of the plurality of modules. The health monitoring system monitors the availability status of the one or more modules, receives a query from a host server identifying a module and processes the query to determine an availability status of module. The health monitoring system then sends a response to the query to the host server. The host server(s) is configured to receive client requests 604, process the client requests to determine one or more data items, select one or more modules having the one or more data items stored thereon, and responsively transfer one or more queries requesting availability of the one or more modules to the health monitoring system. The health monitoring system is configured to periodically determine the availability status of the one or more modules. Advantageously, the monitoring of the modules is bifurcated from the host or front-end server to offload the monitoring burden.
