Abstract
A base frame on the seafloor 6 and having docking receptacles 3 provides a supporting foundation for connection, such as by mechanical latching, to a sea floor drilling rig having docking cones (4, Fig 1) which facilitate connection. The drilling rig can be disconnected from the base frame and recovered to a support vessel leaving the base frame on the sea floor with drilling tools, such as rods, pipes, and casings and other dowhhole equipment 3, which are left free-standing, hanging or clamped 5 within the base frame. The drilling rig may then be redeployed and connected to the base frame on the seabed when convenient. The base frame may also support other equipment such as mud storage, shearing and cutting rams, leveling jacks and mud skirts.
Description
Disconnect-able Sea Floor Orilling Rig Base Frame
Description
A brief summary of the figures is as follows:
Figure 1 shows a typical Sea Floor Drilling Rig in plan and elevation.
Figure 2 shows a typical Base Frame in plan and elevation.
Figure 3 shows the sea floor location selected for drilling.
Figure 4 shows the Base Frame at the sea floor location.
Figure 5 shows the Sea Floor Drilling Rig and Base Frame at the sea floor location.
Figure 6 shows the Sea Floor Drilling Rig and Base Frame as the sea floor location in process of drilling a bore-hole.
Figure 7 shows the Sea Floor Drilling Rig temporarily removed from the Base Frame.
Figure 8 shows Sea Floor Drilling Rig re-positioned on Base Frame.
The Base Frame (figure 2) is of a typical design although it is to be understood that the dimensions, weight and details may vary greatly depending on the specific application and specific sea floor drilling rig (figure 1) with which it will operate. As a minimum requirement the Base Frame shall contain a clear passage I to allow that drilling tools (for example casings, rod, pipes and other down-hole equipment 2) may be drifted through with out hindrance. It shall also contain sufficient apparatus, for example docking receptacles 3, to allow the sea floor drilling rig to be re-positioned and re-connected as required. The sea floor drilling rig may also contain apparatus, for example docking cones 4, to facilitate re-connection.
The location on to which the sea floor drilling rig is to be positioned is selected (figure 3). A Base Frame is then lowered to the sea floor 6 and placed at the selected location (figure 4). The Base Frame may be lowered as a separate item from the sea floor drilling rig, or alternatively both the Base Frame and sea floor drilling rig could be lowered together. The choice of whether to lower separately or together will depend upon the combined weight of the two units and the ability of the support vessel crane and winch equipment to deploy them together, as well as other operational constraints.
The sea floor drilling rig is connected to the Base Frame and drilling activity can commence (figures 5 and 6). The bore-hole is created using the drilling tools 6. If required, the Base Frame and sea floor drilling rig may be mechanically connected using devices such as latches etc. The requirement for latching together the Base Frame and sea floor drilling rig may depend on any advantage which may be obtained by generating additional reaction weight for the purposes of drilling and testing. The weight of the Base Frame may be increased by the use of additional ballast material if it is desired to greatly increase the reaction available.
Advantageously the base frame can also be used to support other aspects of the sea floor drilling operations such as, but not limited to, additional drilling mud storage capacity, shearing and cutting rams for use in an emergency abandonment, levelling jacks for operations on slopes and mud skirts for operations in soft ground conditions.
In the event that it is desired to remove the sea floor drilling rig and recover it to the vicinity of the support vessel, the drilling tools in the bore-hole (which may consist for example of casings, rods, pies and other down-hole equipment) may be disconnected from the sea floor drilling rig. The drilling tools in the bore-hole may then be left free-standing or alternatively they may be secured to the Base Frame by means of a clamping device 5 or alternatively laid onto a hang-off shoulder and slot arrangement, as is typically found for handling drilling tools. The sea floor drilling rig may then be disconnected and recovered (figure 7).
At a time of convenience it is now possible to re-deploy and re-position the sea floor drilling rig bag onto the Base Frame (figure 8). Apparatus to assist with final alignment and detailed re-positioning of the sea floor drilling rig and Base Frame will be built into both devices as required 3,4. Such apparatus is well known to the underwater construction industry and includes such commonplace fixtures as docking cones, bumper bars and other alignment devices. Standard industry reference documents such as ISO 13628-8 "Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) interfaces on subsea production systems" can provide guidance on the detailed design and operation of such apparatus.
The sea floor drilling rig is now mated to the Base Frame and is able to re-connect with the drilling tools in the bore-hole. The progress of the bore-hole is therefore enabled.
Claims (1)
- <claim-text>Claims 1. A dis-connectable Base Frame structure. The structure may be connected to a sea floor drilling rig. The base frame being then dis-connectable in order to allow the sea floor drill rig to be removed to the near vicinity of the surface support vessel, craft or platform, while leaving the Base Frame present on the sea floor and drilling tools present in the bore-hole.</claim-text> <claim-text>2. The Base Frame described in 1. such that the sea floor drill rig can be re-positioned and re-connected to the Base Frame and drilling tools thus allowing the progress of the bore-hole to be enabled.</claim-text> <claim-text>3. The Base Frame described in 1. such that the Base Frame can also be used to support other aspects of the sea floor drilling operations such as, but not limited to, additional drilling mud storage capacity, shearing and culling rams for use in an emergency abandonment, levelling jacks for operations on slopes and mud skirts for operations in soft ground conditions.</claim-text>
