Abstract

A carton formed from a blank of stiff but foldable board material has a series of side wall panels (101-105) joined to form a tube which can be unfolded from a flat orientation to an erected orientation. Two dividing panels (112, 114) extend between an opposed pair of said side wall panels. Three partitions (121-123, 131-133) cut out from and hinged to each dividing panel are adapted to extend on both sides of the dividing panel (112, 114) in the erected orientation of the carton. A blank for the carton is also provided.

Description

PACKAGING CARTON
[0001] This invention relates to a packaging carton and to a blank for forming the carton.
[0002]WO 2006/ 024106 describes a carton for bottles having an internal wall structure connected to the side wall panels at pre-selected locations such that as the enclosure is manipulated form the collapsed orientation to the assembled orientation, the internal wall structure is located in an operative position which defines separate compartments each adapted to receive a bottle. The internal structure includes two layers of material for forming lateral dividers on either side thereof.
[0003] With the aim of greater efficiency, the present invention provides a packaging carton, substantially as described herein with reference to Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings.
[0004] The invention also provides a blank of stiff but foldable board material, substantially as described herein with reference to Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings.
[0005] The invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: [0006] Figure 1 shows a blank for forming a carton according to the invention; and [0007] Figure 2 shows a carton formed from the blank of Figure 1.
[0008] As shown in Figure 1, a blank of doubled-faced corrugated paperboard is provided for forming a parallelepiped carton. Crease lines are shown dotted whilst cut lines are shown as solid. A series of side wall panels includes a first part-end-wall panel 101, a first longitudinal panel 102, a transverse panel 103, a second longitudinal panel 104 and a second part-end-wall panel 105. First end-wall-panel 101 has a width about half that of transverse panel 3 and second part-end-wall panel 105 has a width approximately two-thirds that of transverse panel 103. Each of the panels 101 to 105 has a top flap 106 and a bottom flap 107 depending therefrom.
[0009] The series of panels continues with a first dividing panel 112, an intermediate panel 113, a second dividing panel 114 and a flange 115.
Dividing panels 112, 114 are substantially the same size and shape as longitudinal panels 102, 104 and intermediate panel 113 has a width approximately one-third that of transverse panel 103. Each dividing panel 112, 114 is formed with three partitions 121 to 123 and 131 to 133 spaced equidistantly along the panel and cut out therefrom. The partitions each have two collinear vertical hinge lines 121a to 123a and 131a to 133a on either side of a main part 121b to 123b and 131b to 133b of the partition, the main part extending on one side of the respective hinge line, and ears 121c to 123c and 131c to 133c on the other side thereof, the ears 122c of partition 122 straddling the main part 121b of adjacent partition 121, etc. [0010] In order to form a carton from the blank, the panels 101 to 105 and 112 to 115 are folded into a tube. Part-end-panels 101 and 105 are glued together, intermediate panel 113 is glued to the part of transverse panel 103 shown hatched and flange 115 is glued to the part of part-end-panel 105 shown hatched. In addition, ears 121c are glued to ears 133c, ears 122c are glued to ears 132c and ears 123c are glued to ears 131c.
[0011] In the flat, partly glued condition of the carton, the creases between panels 102 and 103, panels 104 and 105, and panels 112 and 113 are folded so that the panels in those pairs lie against each other. The remainder of the crease lines in Figure 2 are not folded.
[0012] When the user erects the carton by bringing all the creases shown in Figure 2 to a right angle fold, dividing panels 112 and 114 move apart by the width of intermediate panel 113 to divide the carton into three equally sized longitudinal sections. At the same time the partitions 121 to 123 and 131 to 133 fold along hinge lines 121a etc, due to the mutual attachment of the ears 121c etc as described above, until they come to right angles to the dividing panels 112, 114. An outer longitudinal section of the carton is divided into four compartments by main parts 121b to 123b, the central longitudinal section is divided into four compartments by the attached ears 121c, 133c; 122c; 132c and 123c, 131c; and the other outer longitudinal section is divided into four compartments by main parts 131b to 133b. After gluing of the bottom flaps 107, the carton appears as shown in Figure 3, with twelve equally sized compartments.
[0013] A bottle or like object can be placed in each of the compartments before sealing the top flaps 106.
[0014] The invention provides an efficient compartmentalised carton for carrying twelve bottles or the like.
