Abstract

A wireless device (10) has two or more radio systems (20,30) and at least 2 SIM channels (21,31). The radio systems may include antennas (22,32), RF and baseband processing circuitry. The SIM and radio systems may be similar (eg. both UMTS in the same frequency band) or different (eg. a UMTS and a CMDA or different frequency bands). At least a part of the first radio system (20) can be shut down by supervisory layer (40) to reduce the power consumed by the device (10). The conditions for shutdown are if the first radio system (20) is unable to obtain suitable service for the first SIM channel and the second radio system (30) is: (i) providing at least some service on the second SIM channel for the device (10), and/or (ii) capable of searching for service for the first radio system (20). If the above conditions cease then radio system (20) can be reactivated.
