Abstract

A method of producing biochar 40 from green waste 10 for use in the preparation 30 of a soil horizon, comprising the steps of: reducing 16 the moisture content of the green waste 10 in a moisture reduction process, pyrolysing or gasifying 34 the green waste having reduced moisture content to produce biochar 40, utilising a proportion of heated exhaust gases 38 from the pyrolysis or gasification 34 in reducing the moisture content of further green waste for pyrolysis or gasification 34, and extracting gas 18 from decomposed or decomposing landfill 14 for use in the moisture reduction process. The produced biochar may be used in a soil horizon above contaminated land which has been sealed by a pozzolanic pan.
