Abstract

An enclosure/housing system for enclosing personal computing (PC) apparatus within a wall, a bench, or a desk mounted housing. The system comprises a common metal trunking 11, a chassis 10 for holding each PC apparatus to be placed within the trunking, a shared power supply and a shared network connection (such as a LAN network) device. Once the system is assembled, no power or network wires are visible. The system may provide separated compartment routes for data and power cables. Each PC apparatus may have a visual display unit (VDU) or monitor also located within the trunking. The system helps management of cables when a number of computers are present, such as in commercial office or education settings.

Description

A Trunking Bar For Mounting One Or More Computer Device The present invention relates generally to a system for enclosing personal computing (PC) apparatus within a wall or bench mounted housing whereby one or more computer apparatus, shared power supplies and shared networking connections are mounted and enclosed in metal trunking. The present invention also provides for associated visual display units (VDU) to be mounted on the same trunking.
Existing PC systems usually consist of a case enclosing the electronic components and power supply unit for a single PC with various connectors presented externally on the case. A complete PC system will have various externally attached devices minimally consisting of but not limited to a VDU and input devices such as keyboard and graphical pointing device (mouse). Further, some existing PC systems are presented as self contained units with VDU generally known as laptops, notebooks or netbooks, such devices usually having an external power supply. Also further, some existing PC systems consist of a single housing incorporating the VDU and electronic components with externally attached keyboard and mouse commonly known as integrated PCs.
Where a number of PCs are used in the same environment, for example in commercial offices or education settings, there is a widely recognised problem of dealing with the number of cables associated with each PC. Various methods are routinely used to manage this problem including the use of cable ties, cable tubes, plastic mini-trunking and rubber floor cable covers.
In commercial offices and settings it is a requirement to provide each PC position with power outlets and other connections for, say. connection to a local area network (LAN). These are often routed and contained in wall or floor mounted trunking systems providing, typically, two power outlets and one LAN connection for each PC location. Although this approach affords better cable management to the PC location, there remains the problem of managing cables from these outlets to the PCs.
It is generally accepted that the previously described cable management problems can, at best, result in unsightly and untidy working environments and, at worst, present potential dangers to health and safety such as tripping and electrical hazards.
Various attempts have been made to overcome the problems described previously by the use of desk systems which provide for mounting locations for the PC equipment and various cable routing and management systems. Further, some attempts have been made to fully integrate the PC electronic equipment into purpose built housings in the desks and systems for linking these desks together to from continuous and enclosed routes for cable supply and management.
In some commercial office and education settings the use of laptop PCs are replacing the more bulky desktop PCs in part, to overcome the cable management problems. In education settings the use of multiple laptops creates its own set of problems in respect of the security, management and control of aptops.
The present invention aims to provide an improved solution for the use of multiple PCs in, for example but not limited to commercial office and education settings whereby the majority of the PC components, power supplies, LAN connections, VDU and cabling are contained within or mounted directly on a housing system.
Additionally, t is a further aim of the present invention to provide an improved system which does not require any customised or special desking components or housings.
Additionally, it is a further aim of the present invention to also provide the means for the containment and routing for power and LAN cables for environments where multiple PCs are required to be located in close proximity to each other as an alternative to existing cable trunking containment systems.
Additionafy, it is a further aim of the present invention to provide the means for the containment and routing of connector cables for associated presentation audio visual equipment, for example. but not limited to digital projectors, interactive whiteboards. large screen display VDUs and audio amplification systems, Accordingly, in a first aspect the present invention provides a system which encloses the component electronic parts of one or more PCs, one or more power supply units and one or more LAN network connection devices, connected externally by one mains power cable and one LAN cable. Further, the enclosure also provides for power outlets to and mounting points for one or more VDUs serving each enclosed PC.
In a second aspect, the present invention provides a system which encloses the component electronic parts of one or more PCs, one or more power supply units and one or more LAN network connection devices, connected internally to mains power via a common connection point. Further, in this second aspect, the present invention provides physically separate compartments which allow for the routing of mains power and data cables through the system from adjacent connected systems.
The foregoing and further features of the invention will be clarified and become more readily apparent from the following description, by way of example therefore, of preferred embodiments of a system for enclosing personal computing (PC) apparatus within a wall or bench mounted housing with reference to the accompanying drawings of which: Fig 1 is a schemabc view of a four PC embodiment of the present invention with the PC housing components shown exploded from the enclosure Fig 2 is a is a schematic view of a four PC embodiment of the present invention with the PC housing components shown in their nstalled posibon Fig 3 is a cross section view of the housing showing the means for the containment and routing for power and LAN cables in separate compartments.
Referring to the drawings, in fig 1 there is shown an example of the present invention showing 10 a housing for the PC components, lithe supporting chassis into which the PC housings locate as shown attached in fig 2.
The present invention has incorporated power supply and network device shown as 12 in fig 1. These components are mounted internally in the enclosure so 12 in fig 1 shows their location in the overall spatial concept.
Present invenbon is shown in fig 3 with VDUs attached in front facing view. Fig 4 shows the same in plan view. The VDUs are omitted from other figures.
