Description
Stackable Receptacle The present invention relates to a stackable receptacle.
When purchasing more than two beverages, for example four pints of beer, at a counter, it can be difficult for a single person to carry the beverages to a desired seating location, particularly when there is no available tray or the like. In these circumstances, it is common for the person to spill the beverage or even drop one or more of them. This problem is exacerbated when carrying hot beverages, since any spillage could scold the person.
We have now devised a stackable receptacle and a stacking device, which enables a plurality of receptacles to be stacked and carried single-handedly.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a stackable receptacle, the receptacle comprising a base and a side wall which extends from the base and which terminates at an open periphery of the receptacle, the base comprising means for receiving at least a portion of an open periphery of a further receptacle.
The receptacle of the present invention thus enables several such receptacles to be carried single-handedly by locating one or more receptacles upon the open periphery of the receptacle that is held.
The means for receiving at least a portion of the open periphery of the further receptacle is preferably arranged to hold said receptacle upon the open periphery of the further receptacle, such that said receptacle extends substantially above said further receptacle.
This enables the receptacle to be stacked upon the further receptacle even when the further receptacle is substantially filled with a beverage, for example.
Preferably, the recess comprises at least one channel formed therein. The base preferably comprises three channels formed therein, which are angularly distributed about the base. Accordingly, three receptacles of the first aspect can be positioned atop a further receptacle by locating a channel formed in the base of each of the three receptacles with a portion of the open periphery of the further receptacle.
Preferably, the at least one or each channel extends along a substantially arcuate path.
The at least one or each channel preferably extends out through a side of the base at each end of the channel, such that the at least one or each channel comprises a substantially open channel.
Preferably, a width of at least a portion of the at least one or each channel substantially conforms to a width of the side wall proximate the open periphery of the receptacle. This is found to minimise any tilting of the receptacle positioned atop the further receptacle.
Preferably, the receptacle comprises a receptacle for holding a beverage, such as a drinking cup.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a stacking device for enabling at least one receptacle to be stacked upon a further receptacle, the device comprising means for detachably coupling with a base of a receptacle and means for receiving at least a portion of an open periphery of a receptacle.
Preferably, the means for detachably coupling with a base of a receptacle and the means for receiving at least a portion of an open periphery of a receptacle are disposed at substantially opposite sides of the device.
The means for receiving at least a portion of an open periphery of a receptacle preferably comprises at least one channel formed within the device. The device preferably comprises three channels formed therein, which are angularly distributed about the device. Preferably, the at least one or each channel extends along a substantially arcuate path.
Preferably, the means for detachably coupling with a base of a receptacle comprises a substantially cup shaped recess. Preferably, the cup-shaped recess forms a friction fit with the receptacle. Alternatively, or in addition thereto, the means for coupling with a base of a receptacle comprises a suction cup.
According to a third aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of stacking a plurality of receptacles, the method comprising locating a portion of an open periphery of a receptacle within a channel disposed at a base of a further receptacle.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is perspective view of a stackable receptacle according to an embodiment of the present invention; Figure 2 is a magnified view of the underside of the receptacle of figure 1; Figure 3 is a perspective view of three receptacles of figure 1 stacked upon a further receptacle; Figure 4a is a perspective view of a stacking device according to an embodiment of the present invention; Figure 4b is plan view of the stacking device of figure 4a; and, Figure 4c is a view from the underside of the device of figure 4a.
Referring to figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, there is illustrated a receptacle 10 according to an embodiment of the present invention. The receptacle 10, such as a drinking vessel, comprises a base 11 and a substantially cylindrical side wall 12 formed integrally therewith, which extends from the base 11 and which terminates at an open periphery 12a of the vessel to define an interior portion for holding a beverage (not shown), for
example.
The base 11 is substantially disk shaped and comprises an underside which is separated from a base 12b of the side wall 12 by a disk thickness. The base 11 comprises a depression 13 formed in the underside thereof which is substantially triangular in shape when viewed from the underside, as illustrated in figure 2 of the drawings, but which comprises side faces 13a-c which arc toward the centre of the base.
The base 11 further comprises a projection 14 which extends from the underside of the base 11, at a central region of the depression 13, and which comprises a height which substantially corresponds to the disk thickness. The projection 14 is substantially triangular in shape and comprises side faces 14a-c which follow the contour of the side faces 13a-c of the depression 13 and thus arc toward the centre of the base 11.
The side faces 14a-c of the projection 14 are arranged to separately pass in spaced relation to the adjacent side face 13a-c of the depression 13, such that the depression 13 and projection 14 form three substantially arcuate channels 15, 16, 17 which extend within the base 11 and which are arranged to pass out of the side ha of the base 11.
The channels 15, 16, 17 are angularly spaced around the base 11 by approximately 1200 and are adapted to receive a portion of an open periphery 12a of a further vessel.
The width of the channels 15, 16, 17 defined between the side faces 13a-c, 14a-c of the depression 13 and projection 14 are dimensioned to substantially match the width the cylindrical side wall 12 at the open periphery 12a thereof to minimise any tilting of the vessel 10 when positioned upon a further vessel.
Referring to figure 3 of the drawings, in use, a user (not shown) wishing to carry four drinking vessels lOa-d, for example, each filled with a beverage (not shown), first positions a first vessel lOa upon a second vessel lOb, such that an arcuate channel 15, (for example) formed in the base 11 of the first vessel I Oa locates over a portion of the open periphery 12a of the second vessel lOb. The intimate fit of the portion of the periphery 12a within the channel 15, coupled with the channel depth, minimises any tilting of the first vessel lOa upon the second vessel lOb which would otherwise cause the beverage (not shown) within the first vessel lOa to spill therefrom. The user (not shown) subsequently similarly positions the remaining third lOc and fourth vessel lOd upon the remaining portion of the open periphery 12a of the second vessel lOb. The user (not shown) can then carry all four drinking vessels I Oa-d simultaneously by holding and lifting the second drinking vessel lOb.
The provision of three channels 15, 16, 17 enables a user (not shown) to suitably locate the open periphery 12a of one vessel 10 with the base 11 of another vessel without having to significantly rotate the vessel 10, which may otherwise cause the beverage to be spilled therefrom. In addition, when the vessels 10 are stacked in an inverted orientation for cleaning, the three channels 15, 16, 17 enable any water, for example, located upon the base 11 thereof to drain off the base 11 and thus off vessel 10.
Referring to figure 4 of the drawings, there is illustrated a stacking device 20 according to an embodiment of the present invention. It is envisaged that the stacking device could be used with conventional drinking vessels (not shown), so that conventional drinking vessels can be stacked and carried upon drinking vessels according to the above described embodiment. The device 20 may be formed of a plastic material and comprises a substantially disk shape having a top side 21 and an underside 22. The top side 21 comprises a substantially cup shape and is dimensioned to receive a base of a conventional drinking vessel (not shown), such that the conventional vessel forms a friction fit therewith. Alternatively, or in addition thereto, the top side 21 may comprise a suction device, such as a suction cup (not shown) for detachably coupling the device to a base of a conventional drinking vessel (not shown).
The underside 22 of the device 20 comprises a similar depression 13 and projection 14 to the base 11 of the receptacle 10 described above, and thus comprises three arcuate channels 15, 16, 17 for separately receiving a portion of an open periphery of a conventional vessel (not shown), for example.
In use, a user wishing to carry four conventional drinking vessels (not shown) for example, would first separately couple the top side 21 of three devices 20 to the base 11 of three separate conventional drinking vessels (not shown), using the friction fit and/or the suction cup (not shown). Each of the three vessels are then positioned upon the fourth vessel such that an arcuate channel 15 (for example) formed in each device 20 extends along a portion of the open periphery of the fourth vessel. The user (not shown) can then carry all four vessels single-handedly by holding and lifting the fourth vessel.
From the foregoing therefore, it is evident that the stackable receptacle and stacking device provide a simple yet effective means of carrying several vessels single-handedly. CIams
