Abstract

A camera and screen system for use on a vehicle 1 comprises a plurality of cameras 4, each being adapted to be located on the vehicle, and at least one screen 5. The screen or screens 5 are so arranged that in use an occupant of the vehicle 1 is able to see a plurality of locations outside the vehicle 1 which are not visible by the mirrors alone.

Description

A CAMERA AND SCREEN SYSTEM
The present invention relates to a camera and screen system for use on vehicles, especially, but not exclusively, large commercial vehicles.
A serious problem involved with large commercial vehicles is that there are many blind spots which the driver is unable to see. Since, in large commercial vehicles the driver is located a substantial distance from the ground he is limited in his vision in the immediate vicinity of his vehicle both at the sides and the front and rear of his vehicle. This is most serious when a British vehicle is driven on European roads. In these circumstances the vehicles' mirrors are inadequate to provide good all round vision to ensure safe driving.
When reversing, especially in a narrow space this problem is exacerbated because the driver has to continually move his head from side to side in an attempt to gain all round vision and this in its self is dangerous.
In order to overcome these limitations there is provided according to the present invention a camera and screen system for using on a vehicle, which system comprises a plurality of cameras, each being adapted to be located on a vehicle, and at least one screen, wherein the screen or screens are so arranged that in use an occupant of the vehicle is able to see a plurality of locations outside the vehicle which are not visible by the mirrors alone.
The system may comprise a plurality of screens, each associated with a particular camera.
Alternatively the system may comprise a single screen divided into a plurality of sections each associated with a particular camera.
The system may be so controllable that only those screens associated with the vehicles current movement may be displayed at any one time.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a schematic view of a large commercial vehicle provided with a camera and screen system.
Referring to the drawing there is shown a vehicle 1 provided with an internal mirror 2 and an external mirror 3 in conventional locations at each side of the vehicles cab. Associated with each external mirror 3 is a wide angle camera 4. The cameras 4 may be attached to the external mirrors 3 or integrally formed with the mirrors.
Further cameras 4 are located at the front and rear of the vehicle 1 to enable the driver to see areas that are not visible by means of the existing mirrors.
Inside the cab is located a screen 5 which is connected to the mirrors either by a hard wire connection of wirelessly. Depending on the manoeuvre being made by the vehicle 1, the driver can select which camera or cameras to view. For example, if the vehicle is reversing cameras at the rear of the vehicle can be operated, thereby providing vision to an area which would otherwise be unseen.
The system may be so arranged that the camera or cameras remain in operation whenever the vehicle's engine is running and automatically switches of when the engine stops.
