Description

SECURE MOBILE BARCODE TICKET OR VOUCHER
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The method and system provide a secure means of issuing a barcode to a mobile phone or to a mobile computer which can be used as a valid ticket that gives permission to enter an event or travel in a moving vehicle; or as a voucher that can be redeemed for goods or other services that have been purchased.
The ticket is displayed on a mobile phone screen and consists of three elements including a barcode (1), text describing the essential elements of the ticket (2), and a moving image or a changing piece of text (3) to prevent simple copying of the ticket.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, a 2-d barcode contains the ticket information and a means of authentication using either symmetric or asymmetric security keys. The descriptive text includes a ticket identifier, or ticket number (4), which enables a manual lookup.
For a ticket for travel, the preferred moving image consists of a timer which displays hours, minutes and seconds, showing either the time since the ticket was purchased, or remaining time that the ticket is valid.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
There are number of examples of tickets for events and travel, or vouchers that can be redeemed for goods or services being sent to mobile phones in the form of a barcode which is displayed on the mobile phone's screen and which can be scanned for validation. They are typically transmitted using the Short Messaging Service ("SMS") or Multimedia Messaging Service ("MMS") message formats.
Both of those formats can be copied. MMS can restrict causal copying using digital rights management software, but this method can be overcome. To prevent ticket or voucher copying, a database of used tickets or vouchers is normally maintained.
However, there may be problems accessing and updating the database if ticket or voucher checks occur over a wide area, or just after a ticket or voucher has been issued. For travel markets, this has typically limited mobile phone tickets using SMS or MMS media to Advanced Purchase tickets.
Page 1 The ticket or voucher described herein would typically be purchased electronically through the medium of a mobile phone and subsequently the ticket information displayed on the same mobile phone. The preferred means is to use an application running on the phone to enable this to occur reliably and securely. The application may therefore be written in the Java programming language.
In the preferred embodiment the application does not allow forwarding of the ticket to another phone. Further, the moving image or text will make most copies of the text visible to an inspector. The final element of security is the use of standard symmetric or asymmetric security means within the barcode itself designed to prevent sophisticated ticket copying.
Experience also shows that it is not possible to scan all barcodes. In addition, the user requires information putting the barcode into context. Therefore additional text is shown which provides the ticket number and basic route information.
The invention described here relates to tickets for travel or for events, and to vouchers for the purchase of goods or services. These are referred to as tickets in the detailed
description.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The invention will be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawing. Figure 1 shows a schematic of how the ticket may be displayed on the screen.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
In the present invention, the user buys a ticket. Any channel, including electronically over the Internet and by voice over a phone connected to a Call Centre, could be used to make the purchase. However, in the preferred embodiment the purchase is made using a mobile phone application.
Page 2 Once the purchase is completed, the ticket is sent to the mobile phone. The ticket could be sent using WAP Push or MMS formats. However, in the preferred embodiment, it is sent to an application which is running on the phone. The application then creates the tickets, including the rendering of the barcode into a high quality image. The ticket consists of at least three elements including a barcode (1); a text (2) describing the essential elements of the ticket, which in the preferred embodiment includes the unique ticket number (4); and a moving image (3) or a changing piece of text to prevent simple copying of the ticket.
In the preferred embodiment, the barcode (1) is a 2-d barcode containing encrypted ticket information. Various standards for the packaging of the data have been proposed, including those by the Rail Settlement Plan in the United Kingdom and the International Union of Railways. The barcode will contain the relevant ticket information and will be encrypted using either symmetric of asymmetric keys. In the case of asymmetric encryption, the public key will reside on the ticket inspection device and will be able to authenticate the barcode. The public key does not need to be kept securely. In the case of symmetric encryption, a private key is used to authenticate the barcode and this is kept securely on the inspection device.
The essential text (2) is primarily for the benefit of the ticket user so they know details of their journey or event. The text should also include a unique ticket number (4). This allows the ticket information to be looked up in case the barcode cannot be scanned.
In the preferred embodiment the ticket number is comprised of numerical digits but it could also be an alpha-numeric key.
The moving image or text (3) is designed to prevent simple copying of the ticket. In the prefened embodiment, the image shows the hours, minutes and seconds since the ticket was purchased, or the hours, minutes and seconds remaining till the ticket expires. A visual check of the ticket will therefore show the number of seconds changing. Where a timer is shown by the mobile application, the mobile application may also check the clock against an external clock to prevent the user from changing the timer value by changing the phone's clock settings.
Page 3 As alternative, or an addition to the time display, the barcode may be moved on the screen. This would typically be a sideways movement between once and a few times per second. Such a movement will not hamper ticket scanning, but will be evident to a visual inspection. It may also make scanning easier where part of the mobile device screen is faulty.
Whatever the moving image, the intention is to prevent ticket copying by simple recreating of a ticket image. In the current embodiment of the invention, the display of the ticket, including the moving image, is undertaken by a Java application.
To create the ticket, the ticket information is sent from a secure server to the application on the phone. The ticket information could include the image of the barcode. However, in the preferred embodiment of the ticket, only the ticket information is sent, and the ticket, including the barcode, is rendered on the screen by the application.
In the current embodiment, the ticket information is sent as a 128 Byte enciypted package. The application displays the encrypted information on the screen as a barcode, and also decrypts the information to create the additional information which is to be displayed on the screen.
In an alternative embodiment, the barcode simply consists of the ticket number and symmetric key consisting of a Message Authentication Code (MAC). The MAC ensures that fake tickets can't be created and the application prevents copying of tickets. The full ticket information can then be looked up on an inspection device. If the ticket information is not available on the inspection device, then the inspection device is able to determine the tickets authenticity using the MAC. The inspector then checks the visual ticket information (3) to decide if the ticket is valid. The moving image (4) provides protection against copying of a valid ticket.
In a further embodiment, the ticket information sent contains information for the application to create a fixed number of tickets using the carnet principle. This enables the user to purchase a number of tickets within a single transaction. The device application will then create a ticket based on the carnet information, and the barcode information will contain both the carnet number and the ticket sequence number.
Page 4 To inspect the ticket, the barcode is scanned by an inspector or by a fixed gate. The information in the barcode is decoded. The inspection device will look for the ticket in its own database, and if it finds the ticket will display the information to an inspector, or make a decision to accept or reject the ticket.
If the ticket cannot be found in the database, then the inspection device will decode the barcode and display this information to an inspector, or make a decision to accept or reject the ticket based on this information.
The combination of ticket creation and ticket inspection affords three levels of security.
The first level is a purely visual check. The ticket information is displayed and the moving image will usually make it clear whether the ticket is genuine.
The second level is based on a scan without access to the ticket database. The inspection device will authenticate the ticket based on the symmetric or asymmetric security within the barcode. This level of checking would usually be employed where the ticket has just been purchased and the ticket information is yet to reach the database on the inspection device.
The third level of checking is a lookup of the ticket number against a database on the inspection device. Even if a sophisticated fraud breaks the second level of inspection and creates tickets, these will not exist in the main database.
In addition, all inspections are recorded and the inspection records are collated centrally. This allows an analysis of inspections to spot misuse of tickets.
In some applications, the ticket will have a time validity period. In this instance the moving image may display the amount of time for which the ticket is valid. This may be used for the carnet product. In this case, the user will purchase a carnet block of mobile tickets. The user will then request the mobile application to create a ticket from the carnet. The ticket will be created and will be valid for a fixed period of time.
The applications will then count down the time remaining for ticket validity and display this on the screen. In a further embodiment, the application will also check the time against an external clock signal using the mobile phones capabilities.
