Abstract

A nappy comprises a first liquid permeable layer 2 adapted to lie against a person, an outer layer 3 of liquid impermeable material, absorbent material 4 between the inner 2 and outer 3 layers and spaced tie members 7 connecting the inner layer 2 and the outer layer 3 together through the absorbent material 4. In use, when the nappy becomes wet, the absorbent material 4 swells causing the outer layer 3 between the tie members 7 to be biased away from the inner layer 2 causing the outer layer 3 to form an irregular surface which can be felt through clothing of a person wearing the nappy. The tie members 7 may be parallel, elongate strips of material forming channels of absorbent material between the inner 2 and outer 3 layers. The width of material between the strips of material in the outer layer 3 may be greater than the width of material between the strips of material in the inner layer 2.

Description

Title: Improvements Relating to Nappies The present invention relates to improvements to nappies.
It is often desirable to ascertain whether or not a nappy is wet so that it should be changed.
Hitherto it has been necessary to inspect the nappy by removing first clothes from the person wearing the nappy and then opening the nappy. This can be tedious.
ft has been suggested to incorporate a colour changing indicator on the outside of the nappy. But this would still make it necessary to inspect the nappy by removing first clothes from the person wearing the nappy.
The invention seeks to provide a solution to this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a nappy comprising a first inner liquid permeable layer of material adapted to lie against a person, an outer layer of liquid impermeable material, absorbent material between said first and second layers of material, and spaced tie members connecting the first and second layers of material together through the absorbent material, in use when the nappy becomes wet the absorbent material swells causing the outer layer between the tie members to be biased away from the inner layer causing an irregular surface in the outer layer s'hich can be felt through clothing of a person wearing the nappy.
Preferably the tie members are a plurality of elongate and parallel strips of material forming channels of absorbent material between the first and second layers, and undulations are formed in the second layer when the nappy is wet.
Preferably the width of material between the strips of material in the second layer is greater than the width of material between the strips of material in the first layer.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a nappy.
Figure 2A shows a cross section view of the nappy of Figure 1 when dry, and Figure 2B shows a cross section view of the nappy of Figure 1 when wet.
Referring to Figure 1 there is shown a nappy I. Nappy I comprises a first inner liquid permeable layer 2 of material adapted to lie against a person, an outer layer of liquid impermeable material 3, and absorbent material 4 between the first and second layers of material. Nappy I may further comprise flaps 5A,5B which, when the nappy is worn, bond with adhesive ties 6A,6B.
Spaced tie members are provided in the form of a plurality of elongate and parallel strips 7 of material connecting the first and second layers 2,3 of material together through the absorbent material forming channels of absorbent material. The width of material between the strips 7 in the second layer 3 is greater than the width of material between the strips 7 in the first layer 2.
As shown in Figure 2B, when the nappy becomes wet, the absorbent material swells causing the outer layer 3 between the strips 7 to be biased away from the inner layer 2 and undulations are formed in the second layer 3 which can be felt through clothing of a person wearing the nappy, e.g. by passing a finger over the undulations under clothing.
It is anticipated that the strips 7 could be welded or stitched to the first and second layers 2,3.
The tie members may be at least 1.5cm apart, so that the undulations are large enough to be felt.
The tie members may be other than parallel strips of material, e.g. annular strips between the first and second layers producing circular lumps the second layer when the nappy is wet. Also the tie members may be located only over a portion of absorbent area of the nappy.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above. For example the width of material between the strips 7 in the second layer 3 maybe.cqual the width of material between the strips 7 in the first layer 2 causing undulations in both the first and second layers.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
