Abstract

An image capture device is used to acquire a first, relatively low resolution image of a relatively wide field of view (FOV) containing a plurality of objects. A pattern recognition algorithm is then applied to the first image so as to identify objects of interest, and at least one object of interest is selected from the first image and its coordinates within the image are determined. The determined coordinates are then used to control either the image capture device or an additional image capture device so as to obtain a sequence of second, relatively high resolution images of a relatively narrow field of view (FOV) containing the at least one object of interest. A corresponding method is also independently claimed. The first image may be time multiplexed with the second images. The imaging device may perform digital zoom, pan and/or tilt, to select the narrow view field; alternatively, zoom, pan and/or tilt may be achieved electromagnetically. The system may be applied to face recognition, with face and/or eye locating being performed.
