Abstract
A panel joining fastener comprises a bridge member 12 supporting juxtaposed panels 13, 14 and having hinged extensions 15 with angled dowelling 16. The angled dowelling 16 snap-fits into dowel-receiving apertures 17in the panels 13, 14.
Description
1 2445954 Connectors This invention relates to fasteners, particularly,
but not exclusively, for joining panels e.g. of flat pack furniture, and to panels and assemblies comprising or adapted to be joined by the same.
Panels, especially in flat pack furniture, are joined by dowels, bolts, screws, brackets, and other fastening elements. Flat pack furniture is intended to be assembled by the purchaser, who may not be skilled or who may not have the right tools, even though required skills and tools may be basic.
Screws and bolts, in any event, pass through panels and involve drilled holes, which leave screw and bolt heads visible, even if countersunk, requiring concealing plugs which, however, themselves are visible and may detract from the appearance of the assembled article.
The present invention provides an improved fastener and improved flat pack furniture and other articles embodying the same.
The invention comprises, in one aspect, a panel-joining fastener comprising a bridge member supporting juxtaposed panels and having hinged extensions with angled dowelling which snap-fits into dowel-receiving aperturing in the panels.
The dowelling may be angled inwardly.
The hinged extensions may be on live hinges.
The bridge member may comprise an angled member, for joining panels at an angle. The angle may be 90 . The bridge member may, however, comprise a flat (fishplate) member, for butt-joining panels The bridge member may, when angled, comprise an outer corner fastener, with inwardly projecting dowelling, or an inner corner fastener, with outwardly projecting dowelling.
Outer and inner corner fasteners may be used together.
The dowelling may be angled at 45 .
The dowelling may comprise a single dowel on each hinged extension. Multiple dowels may be provided on one or both extensions, however. Multiple dowels may be located at different distances from the extension hinge, and may be parallel or differently angled.
The fastener may be made in metal or plastic or other material. Where the hinged extensions are on live hinges, the material, at least of the hinge part, should be elastically deformable. And a degree of elasticity, whether in the fastener or in the panels to be joined, is required for the snap-fit feature. As the fastener will determine, at least to some extent, the shape of the connection, be it a corner or a planar continuation, it will usually be essentially rigid.
Dowelling may be circular in cross-section, and will then engage circular-section aperturing, which may be made by drilling, in the panels to be fastened. However, different cross-sections may be used, for example, a rectangular section dowel fitting into a like section aperture made, perhaps, by a router.
The fastener may have a stiffening arrangement, which may comprise a web structure between the arms of the bridge member. A stiffening arrangement may, however, comprise a centrally hinged strut deployable between a free position and an engaged position, into which latter position it snap-fits to be engaged to brace the panel joint.
Where the joint is angled, the web structure can extend from beyond the extension hinges to form, together with the angled member, a parallelogram, in the free position, snapping back so that the web structure lies flat.
The invention also comprises a panel joint comprising panels and a panel-joining fastener comprising a bridge member supporting juxtaposed panels and having hinged extensions with angled dowelling snap-fitted into dowel-receiving aperturing in the panels.
The panels may have additional locating arrangements, such, for example, as tongue and groove interconnection.
The invention also comprises a structure, such as a piece of furniture, constructed from panelling, especially flat-pack panelling, comprising panel joints comprising panel joining fasteners as herein disclosed.
Embodiments of panel joining fasteners, panel joints comprising the same, and furniture comprising such joints will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a first embodiment of panel joining member; Figure 2 is an edge-on view of the panel joining member of Figure 1, being presented to two panels assembled to make ajoint; Figure 3 is a view like Figure 2, with the panel joining member deformed just prior to engagement; Figure 4 is a view like Figure 2, with the panel joining member engaged to lock the panels together.
Figure 5 is a view like Figure 2 of a second embodiment of panel joining member engaged to lock two panels together; Figure 6 is a view like Figure 5 but with a third embodiment of panel joining member; Figure 7 is a view like Figure 5 with a fourth embodiment of panel joining member; Figure 8 is a view like Figure 5 with a fifth embodiment of panel joining member; Figure 9 is a view like Figure 5 with a first variant of the fifth embodiment of panel joining member; Figure 10 is a view like Figure 5 with a second variant of the fifth embodiment of panel joining member; Figure II is a view like Figure 5, with a third variant of the fifth embodiment of panel joining member; Figure 12 is an edge-on view of a hinge variant of the fifth embodiment of panel joining member; Figure 13 is a side elevation of a drilling template for use with the fifth embodiment of panel joining member; Figure 14 is a side elevation of a braced fastener; and Figure 15 is a side elevation of another braced fastener.
The drawings illustrate a panel-joining fastener 11 comprising a bridge member 12 supporting juxtaposed panels 13, 14 and having hinged extensions 15 with angled dowelling 16 which snap-fits into dowel-receiving aperturing 17 in the panels 13, 14.
The dowelling 16 is angled with respect to the face of the panel 13, 14 into which it snap-fits, and is angled inwardly at 450 with respect to the joined panel edges 13a, l4a.
The hinged extensions 15 are on live hinges 18, which presupposes a sufficient degree of flexibility in the material from which the fastener 11 is made.
The bridge member 12 illustrated in Figures 1 to 9 comprises an angled member, for joining panels at an angle. In the embodiments of Figures 1 to 8, the angle is 90 . In the embodiment of Figure 9, the angle is 135 . The embodiment illustrated in Figure 10 has a flat, fishplate, bridge member 12, facilitating a butt joint between the panels 13, 14.
Figure 11 illustrates a curved fishplate member, for butt-joining curved panels 13, 14.
The fastener 11 illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 comprises an inner corner fastener, which the fasteners illustrated in Figures 5 and 6 comprise Outer corner fasteners. Outer and inner corner fasteners may be used together, and may, as illustrated in Figure 7, be combined into a single fastener. A web 19 joins the inner and outer bridge members 12i, 12o.
The embodiments of Figures Ito 5 and 7 comprise a single dowel 16 on each hinged extension 17. Multiple dowels may provided on one or both extensions, however, and Figures 6 and 8 to 11 each show two dowels I 6a, I 6b on each extension 15. These dowels are located at different distances from the extension's live hinge 18, and may be parallel or, as illustrated, differently angled. For such doweling, a drilling template 21, Figure 13, with appropriately angled drill guides 22, 23.
The template 21 comprises a first drill guide aperture 22 for drilling a first dowel receiving aperture 23, which is at right angles into the panel, and a peg 24 to locate the first drill guide aperture 22 on the first dowel receiving aperture 25, when drilled, properly to locate the second drill guide aperture 23 for drilling the second dowel receiving aperture 26.
Figures 2,3 and 4 illustrate stages in making a corner joint using a panel joining fastener of the invention. The panels 13, 14 are first juxtaposed, and the fastener 11 approximated, as seen in Figure 2. The hinged extensions 15 are pinched back, as seen in Figure 3 to allow the bridge member 12 to approach the corner between the panels 13, 14.
Once the bridge member 12 is in the corner, the hinged extensions 15 are allowed to snap back, the dowels 15 being forced into the dowel receiving aperturing in the panels. Outer corner fasteners are fixed similarly, the hinged extensions now, however, being bent back.
As seen in Figures 2 to 4 and 6, the panelling, 13, 14, has a tongue and groove arrangement 31 militating against movement of either panel away from the fastened 14 along the direction of the dowel or dowels 15. No such provision is required where there are differently angled dowels on the bridge members, as in Figures 8 to 12. Figure 12 illustrates a hinge arrangement in which the bridge member 12 itself is hinged.
The fastener 11 can be made in metal or plastic or other material. Where the hinged extensions 15, or the hinged bridge member 12 of the embodiment of Figure 13, are on live hinges, the material, at least of the hinge part, should be elastically deformable. And a degree of elasticity, whether in the fastener or in the panels to be joined, is required for the snap-fit feature. As the fastener 11 will determine, at least to some extent, the shape of the connection, be it a corner (a right-angled or any other angle corner) or a planar continuation or a curved continuation, the bridge member 12 will usually be essentially rigid.
Dowelling 15 as illustrated is circular in cross-section, and engages circular-section aperturing, which may be made by drilling, in the panels to be fastened. However, different cross-sections may be used, for example, a rectangular section dowel fitting into a like section aperture made, perhaps, by a router.
The fastener illustrated in Figure 14 has a stiffening arrangement 41, which comprises a web structure between the arms of the bridge member 12. Figure 15 illustrates a stiffening arrangement comprising a centrally hinged strut 42 the ends 42a, 42b of which are hinged to the ends of the hinged extensions 15 of the fastener II. The strut is deployable between a free position (broken line) and an engaged position (solid line), into which latter position it snap-fits to be engaged to brace the panel joint. Where the joint is angled, the web structure can extend from beyond the extension hinges to form, together with the angled member, a parallelogram, in the free position, snapping back so that the web structure lies flat. Such braced or stiffened fasteners can be used as shelf supports, either in flat pack furniture or as brackets for wall mounting shelves or cupboards.
Flat pack furniture will comprises panel jointing comprising panels and panel-joining fasteners all as herein described, the panels being pre-drilled for the fasteners or the pack containing a template as described, and the panels having, where required, additional locating features such as tongue and groove arrangements.
