Abstract

The network selection routine in a mobile telephone is expanded to allow for the automatic preferential usage of a private mobile phone network. Data supporting the additional routine is held in either the mobile phone or its SIM card.

Description

Application for a patent.
Title: Mobile telephony, private network selection.
Background:
This invention relates to the use of mobile telephones and their connection to private mobile phone networks.
The mass use of mobile phones on national public networks is well established.
Modern technology allows for the creation of small private mobile phone networks that serve the occupants of buildings and campuses using their normal mobile phones in closed user groups. Whilst outside the building or campus, the phones revert back to the national public network.
Network selection is built into the protocols of mobile telephony systems, but it is a manual activity.
Statement of invention:
This invention provides a means for the automatic movement of the mobile phone between the national public network and the private network. It does so by adding an additional network selection software routine into the mobile phone software that uses data stored either in the mobile phone or on the SIM card.
Advantages: Once invoked, this feature ensures that the mobile phone will always camp on the private network whenever and wherever it is available. This provides benefits to the closed user group such as free calls between its members.
Detailed description:
A mobile phone behaves according to the software loaded into it. Shortly after switch-on, a mobile phone attaches itself to its home network, as determined by its SIM card. This is a well defined process, known as cell selection that operates as follows; the phone interrogates the SIM card to extract the identity of the home network and the radio channels to be scanned by the phone in order to detect that network. Once detected, the phone then registers on the home network and goes into idle mode, waiting to make or receive a call.
The advent of private mobile phone networks means that the mobile phone needs to search for two (or more) networks and camp on the private network whenever it is detected. If no private network is detected, the phone reverts back to the relevant national public network.
The additional new software module resides in the mobile phone, interlinked with the existing cell selection routine so as to periodically search for the private network. Information about the private network identity and channels to be scanned can be held in the mobile as part of the module. As an alternative, this data can be held encrypted in the SIM card in an accessible memory location such as a telephone number or text message.
As an alternative to directly incorporating this new software module into the mobile phone, it could be arranged to be flash programmed into the phone on demand.

Claims (4)

  1. Claims: 1. An additional software module is added to the software in
the mobile phone giving the phone the ability to detect and subsequently register on private mobile phone networks if detected, and the SIM cards national home network if not.
  2. 2. Registration on the private network takes preference over the national home network.
  3. 3. The data that supports private network selection is held in the mobile phone or, encrypted in the SIM card.
  4. 4. The additional software modUle can either be hard-coded into the mobile phone or flash programmed into it.
