Abstract

A system for playing electronic entertainment content, such as movies or films or games comprises apparatus for downloading the entertainment or games content from the Internet and a storage device, preferably a hard drive, having sufficient capacity to store the entertainment or games content. There is preferably a computer attached to the system and an apparatus for playing the downloaded content which is a games console.

Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO ELECTROMC
ENTERTAINMENT
The present invention relates to improvements in or relating to systems for playing electronic games and particularly, but not exclusively, to devices such as PlayStation and Nintendo.
Electronic games use software programs for the purpose of entertainment or education and have in the many years since their inception become increasingly sophiticated and realistic with the use of colour, sound and movement. Essentially, there are two classes of electronic games. The first includes video games, which are played on video game systems, hand held devices or consoles. The second class includes computer games which are played on personal computers.
Video game consoles are hand held devices which contain a small computer dedicated to playing games. They may include a screen or be connectable to, for example, a television set or possibly through a USB connection to a computer so that the game can be played on the computer monitor. Many video games have been produced by companies such as Nintendo and Sony (with its PlayStation and then PlayStation 2). Generally, games are purchased in the form of a CD, DVD or cartridge which are loaded directly into the console.
In computer games, one can type instructions on a keyboard and use a mouse to move a curser around the screen. Although electronic games have been known since the 1970's, computer games became increasingly popular in the 1990's as personal computers became more powerful and CD technology improved. Computer games are now as popular as video games and their possibilities seem unlimited.
A disadvantage of current electronic gaming, as far as players are concerned, is that they have to go to the expense and inconvenience of purchasing a new CD or DVD every time they wish to play a new game A reason for this is that gaming consoles do not have sufficient capacity to store games which require substantial memory.
It would be an advantage to be able to download entertainment or games directly from the internet onto a games console and thereby save the consumer time and money.
To this end there is provided according to the present invention a system for playing electronic entertainment or games, comprising means for downloading entertainment or games from the internet, and storage means having sufficient capacity to store the entertainment or game.
The system for playing the entertainment or games may comprise a hard drive of sufficient size to store the entertainment or game.
The system for playing the entertainment or games may comprise an electronic console.
The storage means may have sufficient capacity to store at least one DVD movie.
The Games might be downloaded on a trial basis for a limited period of days! number of usages! in a lite' version so that they might be tried before purchase. This would be advantageous to both purchaser and manufacturer as exposure to a variety of games would increase sales. Once the programme had been purchased by suitable means such as vouchers bought from shops selling the consoles or direct credit card purchase at the point of download of a full yersion of the game they can be saved onto suitable means by USB attachment of for example a portable hard drive or portable DVD/ CD recorder. As an incentive the purchase price of a downloaded game might be substantially less than the boxed version sold in shops.
The advantage to the manufacturer and purchaser of downloaded games is that a full catalogue of available games would be visible on the dedicated games site whereas in a shop the display of games might be more limited and supplies limited. On line there would be no question of running out of stock.
People will be able to use their PCs to access a particular internet site and then download the required product, whether it be for games, music or movies, to the PC and then via for example cable or wireless to their games console.

Claims (5)

1. A system for playing electronic entertainment or games, comprising means for downloading entertainment or games from the Internet, and storage means having sufficient capacity to store the entertainment or game.
2. A system according to claim 1, comprising a computer connectible to the Internet to receive entertainment or games, means for playing the downloaded entertainment or games and means for connecting the computer to the means for playing the entertainment or games.
3. A system according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the means for playing the entertainment or games comprises a hard drive of sufficient size to store the entertainment or game.
4. A system according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the means for playing the entertainment or games comprises an electronic console.
5. A system according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the storage means has sufficient capacity to store at least one DVD movie.
