Abstract
The invention relates to a food cap 1 which has a cap body 2 forming an open face 3 at the end of a cap recess 4, with the open face 3 being adapted to receive the end of a food item such as cucumber "X". The inner wall 6 of the cap body is formed at least in part of resilient material and tapering inwards over a portion 7 of its length from the open face 3 into the cap recess 4. In use the cut end of a food item can be inserted through the cap open end and the cap resilient wall forming a friction fit with the outer skin of the food item with the tapered wall accommodating variations in the size of a food item. The cap may be made of a food grade EVA foam with a hemispherical closed end 5 and ribs on its side wall to aid grip.
Description
Title: Food Cap The present invention relates to a food cap, and
especially a food cap for preventing drying out and deterioration of foods such as salamis, and fruits such as cucumbers and lemons.
When consuming a cucumber, it is often the case that a person cuts off the end of a cucumber, and then a number of cucumber slices are cut from a length of the cucumber. The rest of the cucumber is then placed in the refrigerator for storage with the cut end of the cucumber exposing the cucumber flesh. The cut end dries out and this dried out end needs to be cut off and discarded in order to reveal fresh flesh. This is wasteful and can lead to the degradation of the whole of the remaining cucumber. The same applies to fruits such as lemons and salamis.
The invention seeks to provide a solution to this problem by providing a cap to seal a cut end of a food item.
According to the present invention there is provided a food cap comprising a cap body forming an open face at the end of a cap recess, said open face being adapted to receive the end of a food item, the inner wall of the cap body being formed at least in part of resilient material and tapering inwards over a portion of its length from the open face into the cap recess, in use the cut end of a food item can be inserted through the cap open end and the cap resilient wall forming a friction fit with the outer skin of the food item with the tapered wall accommodating variations in the size of a food item.
Preferably the cap is generally cylindrical with a hemispherical closed end.
The cap may include ribs on an outer surface thereof to grip the cap whilst placing the cap on or removing the cap from a food item end. The cap may comprise a widened shoulder adjacent the open end to grip the cap whilst placing the cap on or removing the cap from a food item end.
In one embodiment the cap may be moulded from foam as a unitary component.
In another embodiment the cap may be moulded from foam as a unitary component with an outer cover placed over the foam cap. Radially extending projections on the foam cap may engage with recesses on the cover to secure the cover to the foam cap.
The foam may be a food grade EVA foam.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a side view of a first embodiment, Figure 2 shows a cross section view of the embodiment of Figure 1 on the end of a cucumber, Figure 3 shows a side view of a second embodiment, and Figure 4 shows a cross section view of the embodiment of Figure 3 on the end of a cucumber.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, there is shown a cucumber cap 1. Cap I comprises a cap body 2 forming an open face 3 at the end of a cap recess 4. Cap body 2 is formed from an EVA food grade foam with an impermeable skin and is generally cylindrical with a hemispherical end 5 opposing the open face 3. Cap body 2 is moulded as a unitary moulding.
Being of a foam, the inner waIl 6 of the cap body 2 is formed of resilient material. Inner wall 6 also tapers inwards over a portion of its length 7 from the open face 3 into the cap recess 4.
In use, as shown in Figure 2, the cut end of a cucumber "X" can be inserted through the cap open end 3 and the cap resilient wall forming a friction fit with the outer skin of the cucumber with the tapered length 7 of inner wall accommodating variations in the size of a cucumber.
The cap body 2 includes ribs 8 on an outer surface thereof to grip the cap whilst placing the cap on or removing the cap from a cucumber end.
Referring to Figures 3 and 4, there is shown a cucumber cap II. Cap II comprises a cap body 12 forming an open face 13 at the end of a cap recess 14. Cap body 12 is formed from an EVA food grade foam with an impermeable skin and is generally cylindrical with a hemispherical end 15 opposing the open face 13. Cap body 12 is moulded as a unitary moulding.
Being of foam, the inner wall 16 of the cap body 2 is formed of resilient material. Inner wall 16 also tapers inwards over a portion of its length 17 from the open face 13 into the cap recess 14.
Cap body 12 has an outer plastics cover 18 placed over the foam cap body 12. Radially extending projections on the foam cap body engage with recesses on the cover to secure the cover to the foam cap (not shown).
In use, as shown in Figure 4, the cut end of a cucumber "X" can be inserted through the cap open end 13 and the cap resilient wall forming a friction fit with the outer skin of the cucumber with the tapered length 17 of inner wall accommodating variations in the size of a cucumber.
The cap body 12 has a widened shoulder 19 adjacent the open end 13 to help the user grip the cap whilst placing the cap on or removing the cap from a cucumber end.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above. For example the cap may have a shape generally more like an end length of a cucumber. Instead of a foam cap body, the body could be a plastics cap with a resilient collar forming the resilient tapered inner wall adjacent the open end. The cap may be of any colour and may support printed information such as advertising messages. The cap may be designed for food other than cucumbers such as lemons or salamis.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
