Method and apparatus for an integrated telephone caller display and voice call recording system for determining and recording a telephone caller's information on a Personal Computer or associated networked Server contact database program, and recording the voice conversation in that database, comprising a standard telephone [101] and integrated or attached suitable modem and recording device [103] connected to a computer [102] via a control communications connection [104] and an audio connection [105], and a connection to a standard Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), Private Automatic Branch Exchange (PaBX) or similar with CALLER ID / CLI / CLIP enabled [100].
Description
1 2424791 Integrated telephone handset and computer caller display and
voice call recording system.
The present invention relates to an integrated telephone caller display and voice call recording system which automatically displays the calling party on a personal computer, provides facility to automatically dial a called number from the personal computer, and automatically records the resulting voice conversation on the personal computer.
Providing the extra apparatus required to perform the caller display, dialling out and voice recording as an integrated part of the standard desktop telephone has the advantage that the telephone is a recognised everyday tool with which home and office users are familiar and comfortable.
The integrated solution links the telephone to a computer in order to query and store records in a suitable contact database on the computer.
Statement of Invention:
Said telephone is adapted with a Caller-ID-Enabled Modem and Recording Device connected to personal computer by Serial RS232 Communications Connection, USB connection or similar for control and a stereo 3.5 mm Audio connection or similar for voice information transfer.
Said telephone is connected to a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), a Private Automatic Branch Exchange (PaBX) or similar with CALLER ID (alternatively CALLER DISPLAY / CLI / CLIP) enabled.
Upon detecting an incoming call with CLI/CLIP/CALLER ID/CALLER DISPLAY the modem passes data to the personal computer via the control interface. The personal computer receives the data from the modem and decodes the data in order to interrogate a contact database residing on the hard drive storage of the personal computer or networked server.
The personal computer is configured in such a way to match the incoming data from the telephone company caller ID/CLIP/CALLER ID/DISPLAY with records of previous called or calling parties stored in the contact database Upon achieving a match with a stored record the personal computer automatically displays such information on a monitor connected to the personal computer.
Outbound telephone conversations can be initiated by the user by lifting the telephone handset receiver and using the number pad to dial in the conventional sense or by utilising controls within the contact database program displayed on the monitor connected to the personal computer The personal computer contact database program operates in such a way that when a user wishes to initiate a telephone conversation the user opens the record of the appropriate contact said contact record is displayed on the computer monitor and by the user pressing a selected dial-out control said contact database program recognises the selected corresponding contact number and automatically matches and dials an outbound call to said contact number associated with said contact.
Telephone conversations are logged by the contact database program running on the personal computer with the time and date as determined by the digital clock contained within the personal computer. Telephone conversations are logged with the calling party's telephone number that initiated the call, or with the number of the called party when dialled by the user from either the telephone handset or by the dial- out control buttons displayed by the contact database program on the monitor attached to the personal computer. Telephone conversation log entries are marked as either placed (outbound) or received (inbound). Where a multiple-user configuration is in operation the telephone conversation log entries are recorded in the contact database data on an associated networked server for easy retrieval by all users within the multiple-user configuration.
Telephone voice conversations are sound recorded to the sound card contained within the personal computer by utilising a stereo audio connection from the Recording Device either integrated with or separate from the Caller-ID-Enabled Modem. Recorded voice conversations derived from telephone calls are associated with the telephone number from where the telephone number was initiated if the call was inbound or with the telephone number that was dialled from the telephone handset or from the controls on the monitor connected to the personal computer if call was outbound. Where a multiple-user configuration is in operation telephone voice conversation recordings are stored on an associated networked server for easy retrieval by all users within the multiple-user configuration.
For voice call recordings, a typical 40-Gigabtye Hard-disk can be used to store up to 8,000 hours of voice data The data can also be backed-up, removed and stored permanently on an optical storage medium (such as a CD-ROM or DVD).
A user can attach relevant associated type-written annotation notes to any recorded telephone call for the purposes of later easy retrieval by typing ASCII characters on a keyboard attached to the personal computer. Recorded telephone calls with associated annotation notes are permanently held in the contact database data on the personal computer or associated server for later playback via sound broadcast speakers connected to the soundcard of the personal computer.
Telephone conversations can be ended by the user by replacing the telephone handset receiver or by utilising controls displayed in the contact database program on the computer monitor connected to the personal computer.
The Caller Line Identity (alternatively CALLER ID / CLI I CLIP) number of incoming calls from new calling parties previously unknown to the user and without any data recorded in the contact database data on the personal computer are displayed on the monitor of the personal computer. Information pertaining to the identity of the new caller can be added by the user to said database whilst the telephone conversation is in progress or afterwards for the purpose of permanent storage on the personal computer or an associated server. When the telephone call is terminated the call log details and the telephone voice recording can be associated with the new database record entered facilitating instant display of said caller's record on receipt of or for placing subsequent telephone calls.
A user can also attach relevant associated type-written annotation notes to the recorded telephone call associated with the new caller for the purposes of archiving by typing ASCII characters on a keyboard attached to the personal computer.
Recorded telephone calls with associated notes are permanently held in the said database on the personal computer or associated server for later playback via sound broadcast speakers connected to the soundcard of the personal computer.
It is apparent from the foregoing that the call recording system and automatic display of the calling party detail of this invention provides different configuration options to meet various user requirements, either on a stand alone computer or via a Server and network of associated client workstation personal computers. The call recording and automatic display of the calling party details of this invention is easy to operate and maintain, is cost-effective, and is ideal for use by home users small businesses and larger enterprises.
While the present invention has been described in connection with what is considered the most practical and preferred embodiment, it is understood that this invention is not limited to the disclosed embodiment but is intended to cover various arrangements included within the spirit and scope of the broadest interpretation so as to encompass all such modifications and equivalent arrangements.
