Abstract

A helmet with impact absorbing pads c that are in addition to existing helmet safety features to protect the wearer by increasing the impact absorption of the helmet. Preferably the impact absorbing pads c are made from gel although similar impact absorbing materials may also be used. The pads may also provide additional comfort to users by cushioning the skull of the user against the outer shell a of the helmet and any protective inner shell such as polystyrene inner shell b. The gel pads c are preferably elongated in shape and may be located in pockets d that are incorporated into the textile lining e of the helmet that preferably have a resealable openings eg. Velcro (RTM) to allow the pad to be removed and replaced. The pocket openings are preferably located at the crown of the helmet with the pockets d positioned radially around the crown, down towards the extremities of the helmet. Preferably there will be between 10 - 12 gel pads located in the textile lining of the helmet. The helmet may be used by motorcyclists, car racers, cyclists and horse riders.

Description

I
Description
A protective safety helmet for use by motorcyclists, racing drivers, cyclists, horse riders and any other situation wherby a safety helmet is used to combat impact absorption in the event of a collision.
Existing designs incorporate an outer shell, normally constructed from polycarbonate or fibreglass derivatives, internally lined with a polystyrene shell which in turn is lined with a breathable textile liner.
In the interest of increased safety the invention utilises the use of gel (or similar impact absorbing material) pads of a pre-determined shape and volume to be inserted into pockets stitched into the textile liner, these pockets having a resealable opening at the top (by using velcro) so that the pads can be removed and replaced.
The main purpose of the gel pads is to add extra impact resistance to the helmet assembly in the event of a collision but they would also prove very beneficial to overall helmet comfort by cushioning the skull from the relatively hard polystyrene inner shell They could be easily manufactured in various sizes to accurately fit the helmet to the drivers head. (Most existing helmets are manufactured in sizes increasing in 2cm increments therefore the driver buys the helmet which is the nearest to his size) .This is yet another safety aspect of this overall design.
The gelpads would be of a flat cigar like shape approx 5mm thick,l4Omm long and 20mm wide and would slide into pockets of a slightly larger dimension in the textile lining, starting from the crown of the helmet and laid out radially around said crown.

Claims (1)

  1. Claims A crash (safety) helmet incorporating gel (or similar material)
pads in addition to existing crash helmet safety features to further protect the wearer by increased impact absorption.
The pads themselves are situated in pockets stitched into the textile lining of the helmet with a resealable opening at the top to allow pad removal/replacement.
The said opening in the pockets being located at the crown of the helmet and the pockets situated radially around and downwards from the crown.
I would suggest 10 or 12 pads of dimensions listed under the description should suffice.
