Abstract

A device for cleaning and/or disinfecting a handle holds an absorbent pad containing a suitable cleaning and/or disinfecting fluid held securely round a handle. The device is then moved along the length of the handle by manual, mechanical, electro-mechanical or other means to effect the cleaning and/or disinfecting of the surface of the handle. The device may be a ring, split to allow placement over a handle.

Description

24 1 7887 Improvements to a Device for Cleaning and/or Disinfecting a
Handle Our Ref: BJFHDC/2 A device for cleaning and/or disinfecting a handle or other device is the subject of a previous Patent Application (GB 0420195.0) which describes an absorbent pad held in position around a handle by some suitable means. In the invention described, the means of holding the pad in position is described as comprising two components which, when brought together and secured hold the pad in position around the handle.
One disadvantage of this device is that it is designed for linear handles and cannot be used effectively on handles with a curvature because the inside diameter of the device is fixed. The present invention facilitates the cleaning and/or disinfecting of handles that are straight or curved, or any combination of both.
The subject of this present application for patent is an improvement on the device described in GB 0420195.0 in that, in this present device, a single pad (2, Fig 1) of suitable material and impregnated with a suitable cleaning/disinfecting fluid and annular in shape, is fitted round a handle (4, Fig 1) by means of opening up a split (3, Figs I & 2) in the ring thereby allowing the ring to be passed around the handle (4).
The ring is made of some suitable material that regains its shape once round the handle (Fig 1), pulling the inner surface of the ring into close contact with the surface of the handle. The profile of the cut (3, Fig 2) in the ring is such that as the device is pushed around a curve on the handle, the inside diameter of the ring can expand to accommodate the curve (see Fig 2) whilst still ensuring that the pad is in good contact with the surface of the handle being cleaned and/or disinfected, around the whole of the circumference of the handle.
For storage, the whole of the impregnated pad is enclosed by some suitable impenetrable material (l) to prevent evaporation ofthe disinfecting and or cleaning fluid. However, in use, the inner surface which touches the surface of the handle when it is fitted, is exposed by some means so that as the pad is swiped along the handle, the handle is cleaned and/or disinfected by means of the fluid within the pad coming into contact with the surface of the handle.
The device may be replaced by a new one at regular intervals, timed to coincide with the point at which the impregnated pad no longer contains adequate fluid to disinfect and/or clean the handle or other device.

Claims (4)

  1. Claims 1. A device for holding an absorbent pad securely around a handle
  2. 2. As in Claim 1 where the device consists of a split ring of flexible material where the absorbent pad is contained within the device such that when the split ring is placed around the handle the pad is held securely against the surface of the circumference of the handle
  3. 3. As in Claims I and 2 where the absorbent pad is impregnated with a suitable cleaning and/or disinfecting fluid
  4. 4. As in the preceding Claims where the device may be moved along the length of the handle to effect cleaning and/or disinfecting of the surface of the handle
