Abstract

A valve comprises a tube A fitted with an internal divider, the divider being pierced to allow flow. The downstream side of the internal divider has a plug B of shape memory polymer fixed to or sealed against the tube at its circumference; a slit C pierces through the plug B. Application of pressure through the divider will cause the plug B to deform until the slit is forced open, thus allowing through-flow, until the loss of pressure (or equalisation) causes the plug to revert to its original shape in order to effect a total seal. Reverse flow is prevented since the divider prohibits the plug deforming in this direction. The adhesive quality of the SMP material will form an envelope around contaminant particles that become trapped in the seal.

Description

SHAPE MEMORY POLYMER (SMP) VALVE The invention relates to a shape memory
polymer (SMP) valve.
There is requirement in industry for a reliable governable one way valve with no mechanical moving parts that will open under pressure, close automatically when not under pressure and upon application of reverse pressure will close absolutely with no reverse seepage despite the presence of small particle contaminants.
According to the present invention there is provided a valve as abovedescribed which may be configured for use with pressure or gravity fed systems and made suitable for liquid or gas with no risk of corrosion or static electricity.
The shape memory polymer (SMP) valve in its simplest form can comprise a tube fitted with an immovable internal obstructive bulkhead suitably pierced to allow flow. Against the downflow side of the bulkhead is a plug of SMP material fixed to or sealed against the tube at its circumference. The SMP plug is slit through across its centre essentially by equal dimension from centre. Upon application of pressure through the bulkead the SMP will bubble until its slit is forced open and flow occurs. Flow will commence at pressure determined by the SMP composition, its thickness and size of the slit. Flow can occur of liquid or gas or mix and will continue until loss of pressure or equalization whereupon the SMP will revert to its original shape causing total seal, The adhesive quality of SMP closing surfaces is such that small particle contaminants trapped within are enveloped in the seal. Reverse flow is halted by the inability of the SMP material to distort in the opposite direction being obstructed by the bulkhead set above it.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:-.
Figure 1. A plan of a Shape Memory Polymer Valve.
Figure 2. A variant.
Referring to Figure I. The valve comprises a Tube A with a fixed internal bulkhead suitably pierced to allow flow. On the downflow side and against the internal plate a plug of Shape Memory Polymeric (SMP) material B is fixed to the tube at its circumference and pierced across its centre at C. Referring to Figure 2. The shows the valve in variant of identical principle with the internal bulkhead itself reducing to a tube which is surrounded by an SMP plug similarly pierced.

Claims (1)

Upon application of pressure through the bulkhead the SMP will bubble until its slit is forced open and flow occurs.
Flow will commence at pressure determined by the SMP composition, its thickness and size of the slit. Flow can occur of liquid or gas or mix and will continue until loss of pressure or equalization whereupon the SMP will revert to its original shape causing total seal. The adhesive quality of SMP closing surfaces is such that small particle contaminants trapped within are enveloped in the seal. Reverse flow is halted by the inability of the SHIP material to distort in the opposite direction being obstructed by the bulkhead set above it.
