Abstract

A system 100 comprising a host device 110 and a transceiver 120 coupled to the host device is provided. The transceiver 120 is configured to receive a request from a host and cause a test mode of operation to be entered in response to receiving the request. The transceiver may send further requests to the transceiver during the test mode such as a request to perform a calibration step. In response the transceiver may confirm to the host, by sending an "indicator", that it has carried out a request. The host may use the "indicators" to determine whether all calibration steps have been performed, and if they have all been performed it will instruct the receiver to return from test mode to customer mode. The transceiver is preferably suitable for use in fibre optic communication but the host and transceiver are coupled electrically. The transceiver may include memory for storing the requests or/and indicators.
