Description
-1- 2408695 Equipment for playing a game This invention relates to
equipment for playing a game, in which at least part of the equipment has another function, particularly, but not exclusively, as a beach towel.
Many games and pastimes require the use of a gaming surface, for example a chequered board for chess, or a backgammon board for backgammon. In addition, gaming pieces are required, for example die. draughts, chess pieces and so on.
If the game is to be portable the gaming surface can be collapsible, and a container may be provided for the pieces. There are many known constructions of this kind.
Beach towels are large towels intended for use outdoors as a seating surface, and need to be large enough to dry the whole body. Such towels are commonly used on holidays or other relaxation times, and as such the users may have spare time available whilst using them.
The present invention is intended to provide a novel approach.
According to the present invention equipment for playing a game comprises a towel and game pieces, in which the towel is provided with a pocket adapted to receive the game pieces, and in which the towel is provided with a representation of a gaming surface on at least a portion of one side.
The pocket can be any integrally formed pouch, but in a preferred construction the pocket comprises a closable pouch at an end of the towel. The closable pouch can be formed from a substantially rectangular piece of towelling material attached to the end of the towel along three sides thereof so as to leave an aperture along the fourth side. In an alternative construction the closable pouch can be formed by folding one portion of the towel over another portion, and attaching the portions together. The overlapping portions can be attached together such that an aperture is provided.
Closure means can be provided to close the aperture. The closure means can be any known material fastening device, but in a preferred construction the closure means may comprise a hook and loop fastener.
The representation of the gaming surface can be printed onto the towel. The gaming surface can be any suitable pattern, for example chequers or a backgammon board, or it can be a printed image, for example a Monopoly (UK Registered Trade Mark) board or the like. In one construction a number of gaming surfaces can be provided.
The game pieces can be any suitable items for use with the game to be played on the gaming surface, for example chess pieces, or draughts and so on. In a preferred construction the game pieces are constructed from a fabric material, and comprise substantially flat pieces of said material.
The invention can be performed in various ways, but one embodiment will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a towel according to the present invention; Figure 2 is an end view of the towel as shown in Figure 1; and, Figure 3 is a plan view from above of a towel as shown in Figure 1.
In the Figures equipment for playing a game 1 comprises a towel 2 and game pieces 3, In which the towel is provided with a pocket 4 adapted to receive the game pieces 3, and in which the towel 2 is provided with a representation of a gaming surface 5 on at least a portion of one side 6.
The towel 2 is a beach towel and is dimensioned to be longer than the height of a user, such that the user can lie down on it.
The pocket 4 is formed by a rectangular piece of towelling material 7, which Is attached to one end 8 of the towel 2 by means of stitching 9. The stitching 9 extends around three sides of the piece of towelling material 7, such that an aperture 10 is formed, which is the opening of the pocket 4.
Closure means in the form of two opposing surfaces 11 and 12 of a hook and loop fastener, serves to close the aperture 10 to contain the game pieces 3 during storage or transit.
The towel 2 is provided with representations of gaming surfaces 5a and 5b, 5a being a chess or draughts playing surface and 5b being a backgammon playing surface. The surfaces 5a and 5b are printed onto the towel 2.
The gaming pieces 3 are circular pieces of a fabric material, half of them black in colour and half of them white. The pieces 3 can be used to play draughts on surface 5a and backgammon on surface 5b.
In use, the pieces can be stored in the pocket 4 for storage and transit, and they can be removed for playing a game when the towel 2 is unfurled, for example on a beach.
It will be appreciated that the embodiment shown in the Figures can be altered without departing from the spirit of the invention. For example, the gaming surfaces 5a and 5b could be any gaming surface, for example a Monopoly (UK Registered Trade Mark) board or any other known game. In addition, the gaming pieces 3 can be the appropriate shape and size for the game used.
-
ln addition, the pocket could be formed by folding one portion of the towel over another portion, and attaching the portions together.
Further, representations of gaming surfaces may be provided on both sides of the towel.
Thus equipment for playing a game is provided, in which one of the pieces of equipment serves an alternative purpose as a beach towel. The equipment for playing a game is therefore readily transported and always on hand when the towel is used for sunbathing or the like.
