Abstract
A radio operated bolt uses a keyfob transmitter to a receiver which can act to drive a motor-operated bolt. A geared electric motor M acts to rotate a screw-threaded member which engages a nut mounted on the bolt to effect sliding movement of the bolt.
Description
Radio Operated Bolt The invention relates to a unit that enables the user
to bolttunbolt a door from the opposite side.
The unit is operated using a transmitter that sends a signal to a receiver. The receiver operates circuitry, which then drives a bolt either back or forth. This device makes a door more secure against unauthorized attempts to open it.
The Radio Operated Bolt (R.O.B.) is constructed from either a 4 or 6 inch quality heavy duty sliding gate bolt. Ref. Fig I. The original bolt is removed and replaced with a 12mm diameter, 4 or 6 inch length of soft steel. The new bolt is drilled centrally down its length to a depth of 50mm with a 5mm drill. This hole is followed with a second hole drilled to a depth of approximately 4mm using an 8mm drill. This second hole must allow a 4mm nut to be seated within the hole and be flush with the end surface of the bolt. Using epoxy resin, glue in the 4mm nut. Tapering is required on the front end of the 12mm bolt. The end stop (E) ofthe 12mm bolt housing is drilled with a 4mm drill, this hole maybe widened to allow for clearance.
This hole is to align with the 4mm nut.
Two further holes are drilled and tapped to accept a 3mm side bolt (B) and the beam break paddle (P) ref fig 1, the holes are opposite to each other and are 14mm from the end. The paddle may be cut from a piece of thin, black plastic. The side harness (H) is a strip of durable material, 13mm high and 60mm in length. This has a 40mm slot cut within it and it is to allow Bolt B to travel the length. The harness is secured to the bolt stay (S) and to the end stop. Slide the 12mm bolt into the bolt housing. Pass the 8mm length Bolt B through the slot and secure into the 12mm bolt. The paddle is also secured. Using a M4 by 50mm Posidrive bolt, place a crinkled washer followed by a flat washer onto the M4 bolt, place this through the end stop and screw into the 12mm bolt.
The motor assembly, fig 2, uses a geared barrel motor of good torque with a speed of 325 rpm at 12V. From the 6mm drive shaft, connect a 25mm length Posidrive screwdriver bit using adhesive heat shrink sleeving. Mount the motor onto a suitable platform that keeps the drive shaft in line with the M4 and 12mm bolts and hold in place with a flanged "U" shaped tin plate strap.
Prepare the printed circuit board fig 3, from horizontal, copper stripped, 2.54mm matrix board and relative components.25 holes by 10 holes, for the board's dimensions. The copper strips shown in fig 3 are on the reverse of board. The relay (RL) must be a Double Pole Double Throw type. Pay particular attention to the positioning of the infrared transmitters (TX) (TX. ) and receivers (RX) (RX). Type 10379, Maplins catalogue. These must be positioned to allow for clearance of the paddle. The keyfob transmitter and receiver (K6707) can be bought as a kit from the same catalogue. A power supply with the appropriate outputs to operate the PCB, motor and receiver is also needed. To wire the R.O.B. refer to fig 4. Extension cable from the relay to the receiver and power supply may be used.
It is recommend that the bolt-retaining plate has a loose fit. Grease around moving parts and construct a cover for R.O.B, receiver and power supply.
