Abstract

When a vehicle intruder or theft alarm is triggered either by sensors or by manual activation of a panic button, still or moving images of the interior of the vehicle are captured by a camera. These images, along with vehicle identification data and the time and date of the incident are sent via cellular mobile telephone communications to a remote location, such as a police command centre. Tracking of the vehicle may be achieved via the repeated sending of updated images and data via the cellular communication link. The system preferably dials a preprogrammed telephone number preferably linked to an email system within a police computer network.

Description

DESCRIPTION
CAPTURE'VEHICLE PROTECTION CONCEPT 1 'CAPTURE' is an acronym for: Cellular Alarm Photo Tracking for Universal Recovery and Entrapment
2 Background of invention.
The idea for 'CAPTURE' was initiated by a harrowing real life experience of car jacking in a quiet UK suburb. An associate of the person who experienced the car jacking decided to invent a holistic approach, which would maximise the deterrent factor and additionally make detection and resolution of the crime much more likely.
This is clearly illustrated In the stages of operation below.
The approach could be used in all types of land-based vehicles, in all countries where a cellular phone network exists and is appropriate to detect and deter typical 'smash and grab', car theft or car jacking activities.
3 What does 'CAPTURE' do? The 'CAPTURE' system is triggered by a vehicle alarm set off by intrusion or manual panic button and subsequently transmits an image or video clip of the event, together with other basic vehicle, time and date details to the police network. The system also transmits a tracking signal via the cellular network to enable detection and apprehension of the felon and recovery of the vehicle. The image transmission may continue at intervals as long as the system is operational to provide further information to the law enforcement authorities.
Additionally there is an obvious intrinsic feature of strong deterrent to theft or break-in through possibility of visuaHdentfcation.
4 Essential features A vehicle alarm must be present. This will then trigger the cellular imaging device to take and transmit the image(s) to a pre-programmed number, for example a law enforcement message centre The system consists of a digital camera lens connected via cables to a cellular transmission unit. This unit transmits the photo or video message as described in 3 above.
This configuration of components ensures minimal size of camera lens housing and enables remainder of cellular transmission electronics to be concealed wherever appropriate in the vehicle interior. The device must be capable of storing basic data consisting of the appropriate message destination number and the car number plate/model, together with current time and date for transmission with the message A 'Panic' button is additionally Installed to manually Initiate the system in the event of a carjack' situation, where the alarm is disabled due to the vehicle already being occupied legitimately.
Non essential features A video clip as an alternative to still transmission could be a feature of an advanced version of the basic system.
Additionally a commonly available GPS car navigation system could be Interfaced to the device to feed current coordinates as part of the picture message, should vehicle location tracking not be feasible through the local cellular radio network (as In point 3 above).
6 Introduction to the drawings
Figure 1 shows the flow of events starting with vehicle alarm being triggered by intrusion or manual panic button, concluding with potential apprehension of the criminal and/or recovery of the vehicle.
Figure 2 is a basic schematic of the n-car system to illustrate very simply the basic physical components used to initiate the apprehension sequence as In Figure 1 and as described above.
7 Examples of operation 7.1 Alarm triggered application 7.1.1 Break-in occurs through side window smash (Fig 1a) 7.1.2 Car alarm is triggered (Fig 1 a) 7.1.3 Link to cellular imaging device is activated as a result of 7 1.2 (Fig1b) 7.1.4 Image of car interior is taken and transmitted to law enforcement message centre and owner's mobile phone, Including car location information via the cellular radio network. (Fig 1 c) 7.1.5 Car theft in progress 7.1.6 Law enforcement agency receives picture/'nfo message in e-mail system or other appropriate messaging network, which then automatically forwards the message to regional or mobile enforcement associates. (Fig 1d,e and Al 7 1.7 Car device continues to transmit signal and /or series of still or video messages at defined intervals.
7 1.8 Criminal apprehended via iterations of 7.1.6 to 7.1.7 above. (Fig 1g) 7.1.9 Court conviction further solidified by visual evidence.
7.2 Car Jack Situation - Manual trigger 7 2 1 Passenger or driver presses the concealed 'Panic' button, which initiates sequence identical to 7.1.3 and onwards as above. (See also Fig 2)

Claims (4)

1 A vehicle protection device incorporating a cellular communication/photo device mounted internally to the vehicle and connected to the car alarm system.
2 A device as In claim 1 above which is configured to take and transmit an image or video clip to a pre-programmed phone number (linked to an e- mail box within a police computer network) upon vehicle alarm being triggered by detection of an intrusion into the vehicle.
3 A device as in claim 1 and 2 above which constantly transmits a phone signal and /or updated image or video clip at defined intervals postintrusion to enable tracking of location by police networks as defined in claim 3 above.
4 A further 'panic' button linked to the above device as in claims 2-4 above for manual operation of the system should a car Jacking or other intrusion event take place with driver or passengers in situ.
A vehicle cellular imaging alarm system substantially as herein described above and illustrated In the accompanying drawings.
