Abstract

This warning light system for moving vehicles is designed for transport safety and is to be mounted on the rear of a vehicle of any description. It is composed of 3 different coloured lights, which are in visible proximity of the vehicle fitted with the lights to the following vehicle. The lights are activated at the rear of the designated vehicle; when the vehicle is travelling at speeds of 40mph plus. The colour of the light activated, which is determined by the severity of the warning, will depend on the stopping/braking distance of the oncoming vehicle to the designated vehicle.

Description

AKllY(, LIGHT SYSTF,M FOR MOVING VEHICLES This invention relates to a
warning light system for moving vehicles.
Tl1is warning light system for moving vehicles is designed for transport safety and is to be mounted on the on the rear a vehicle of any description. It is composed of 3 dil'ferent coloured lights, which are in visible proximity of one vehicle to a following vehicle. ':l 'he three dil'ferent coloured lights are a warning to drivers with a following vehicle indicating the safe stopping distance in accordance with the recommended breaking distances. '['his invention is designed to reduce accidents and save lives.
The invention is using existing technology and thus would appear to be relatively inexpensive, however it is unique, and matchless for road and transport safety.
l'he invention provides 3 different coloured lights mounted at the rear of any vehicle, which are automatically activated by the vehicle when it is travailing aL speeds -'f 40mph plus. Speeds of under 40 mph are consider in^elevant to this inVcOtion. The first light is green, and is activated when t-avelling at the aforementioned speed and more, With no oncoming vehicle. In the event of a following vehicle at the rear, the light wild only continue to be green ill the following vehicle is travailing at the designated speeds and average stopping/braking distances or Inorc as illustrated below in metres: Tulle 1: Green Light stopping distances Speed 'l'hinking Braling Total Stopping _. _ Distance (m) Distance (n1) I)istance (m) 40MPH 12 36.4 _ 3X.4 50MPII_ 15 _ 52.9 67.9 _ _ 60MPH 18 ___ _ 72.7 90.7 70MPH 21 ')5.4___ 11 6.4 Source: C,haulran & Cl1arman, (1993) UMIST l'he total stopping distance column is considered a safe stopping/braking distance between the vehicles. If the distance is lengthened tl1e light will continue to be green, as it is still considered to be a sate stopping/braking distance.
lisle second light is amber, and is activated when an oncoming vehicle at the rear gets closer, and the stopping/braking distance is no longer safe. '['his light acts as a warning to drivers to increase their distance to the vehicle in front.
The third light is red and pulsating, and will be activated when the vehicle enters the danger area, therefore is too close to the vehicle in front. This is the most severe warning to drivers to increase the stopping/driving distance between vehicles.
A rear sensor device that measures the stopping distance -' t a following vehicle activates the lights.
1\ specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of an example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Idg I. I) emonstrates the general arrangement of the lights: Fig 2. Shows an illustration of driving vehicles.

Claims (5)

1. The 3 coloured warning lights are to be mounted on the rear of any vehicle which is clearly visible to a l'ollowing vehicle, and other traffic.
2. 'I'he warning lights mounted as claimed in Claim 1, are to be separate from the vehicle brake lights,' but the red warning light to pulse brighter, when the following vehicle exceeds the safe stopping/driving distance.
3. The SCnSOr system to be connected to tlc speedonJcter and to only be activated at speeds Of OVCr 4Om1?l1 and all speeds exceeding this with distances determined by the recommended stopping/ braking distance, thus activating the aforementioned three colored lights, Laking info account Claim 1 & 2.
4 'the lights activate automatically at 40mph plus.
5. To be adapted technologically to be used on all roadworthy vehicles, to enhance transport saL'cty.
