Abstract

A compressed transport stream (20 Fig. 3) is analysed 34 to determine the presence or absence of a predetermined number, e.g. at least the first four, of consecutive Event Information Tables (EITs) or programs transmitted in the transport stream in consecutive periods of time including a current EIT of programs currently being transmitted. The transport stream is received 31 to identify, in the transport stream, a master guide table (MGT) 32 containing a transport stream type identifier (101 fig. 1), e.g. a (Terrestrial Virtual Channel table) TVCT identifier, and a list of EITs (102 Fig. 1) purportedly in the transport stream. The MGT is analysed to determine the presence or absence of a terrestrial transport stream identifier 33 and if present the presence or absence of a predetermined number of consecutive EITs including a current EIT 34. A representation of the analysis results is output to a user interface.

Description

Monitoring Event Information Tables of a compressed transport stream.
This invention relates to a method of monitoring Event Information Tables of a compressed transport stream, and in particular of, but not restricted to, MPEG-2 based 5 streams.
A compressed transport stream, for example a MPEG-2 transport stream, typically carries multiple programs or services. It is known for such transport streams to carry up to 150 services. The transport stream comprises service elements in packets, each packet being identified by a Packet Identifier. Included as packets in the 10 transport stream may be Master Guide Tables (MGTs), which list Packet Identifiers (PIDs) for all other tables which should be present in the transport stream apart from a System Time Table. ATSC Standard A/65 "Program and System Formation Protocol for Terrestrial Broadcast and Cable" requires the presence in transport streams for terrestrial transmission of an MGT and also of four Event Information 15 Tables KIT-0, KIT-1, KIT-2 and KIT-3. Terrestrial transport streams are recognisable by the presence of a Terrestrial Virtual Channel Table (TVCT) type entry. The Event Information Guides list the programs to be transmitted in each of 3-hour sessions, KIT-0 being the current session and KIT-1 the next 3-hour session and so on. Other EITs for later periods of time, for example up to a weeks programming, may 20 optionally also be included. There is no requirement in the standard for EITs in satellite or cable transport streams.
However, it is not necessarily known a priori when testing a transport stream whether it is a terrestrial transport stream. Even if it is known, there are no guidelines in the standard on how to monitor whether a terrestrial transport stream meets the 25 standard in respect of the presence of EITs.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a test method and apparatus for verifying conformance with this requirement.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a method of testing a compressed transport stream comprising the steps of: receiving the transport stream; 30 identifying, in the transport stream, a master guide table (MOT) containing a transport
stream type identifier and a list of event information tables (EITs) in the transport stream; analysing the MGT to determine the presence or absence of a terrestrial transport stream identifier and if present the presence or absence of a predetermined number of consecutive Event Information Tables including a current Event 5 Information Table; and outputting results of the analysis.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a test apparatus for a compressed transport stream comprising: receiver means for receiving the transport stream; identifier means for identifying, in the transport stream, a master guide table (MOT) containing a transport stream type identifier and a list of event 10 information tables (EITs) in the transport stream; analyser means for analysing the MGT to determine the presence or absence of a terrestrial transport stream identifier and if present the presence or absence of a predetermined number of consecutive Event Information Tables including a current Event Information Table; and user interface means for outputting results of the analysis.
15 The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a conceptual diagram of a Master Guide Table of a transport stream suitable for analysis by the invention; Figure 2 is a flowchart of steps of the present invention; and 20 Figure 3 is a conceptual diagram of the apparatus of the invention.
Referring to Figure 1, a transport stream contains a Master Guide Table 10, identified as such by Packet Identifier = IFFY, containing, inter alla, a table type 110 for a terrestrial transport stream and a list of Event Information Tables including the Event Information Table type 102 and the corresponding Packet Identifier (PID) 103 25 in the transport stream As shown in Figures 2 and 3, in the test of the invention, steps are carried out to determine that all required Event Information Tables are present in the transport stream.
I A transport stream is received, step 31, by a receiver 41 and a Master Guide Table 10 is identified, step 32, for example by a packet identifier being equal to hexadecimal l FFB and containing a section with a table id Oxc7.
The instance of a Master Guide Table from the transport stream is analysed, step 5 33 to determine whether a TCVT indicator is present indicating that the transport stream is a terrestrial transport stream. If no TCVT indicator is found the test ends because the requirement for EITs applies only to terrestrial transport streams.
If the transport stream is determined to be a terrestrial transport stream the MGT is further analysed, step 34, for the presence of at least the first four EITs for the 10 current time slot and the next three 3- hour time slots respectively. If the first four EITs are not present an alert or other warning is provided on a user interface 46.
Reparative action may then be initiated.
It will be apparent that the invention has applicability not only to ATSC systems
but also at least to other transport streams having MPEG-2 based compression.
