Abstract

A handheld device is disclosed for use during a game of golf and comprises a GPS receiver 2 to enable a golfer to accurately determine their position on the golf course. The device contains software relating to the course layout which may be displayed to the golfer by means of a colour graphical display 3. The information displayed may include hazards such as waterways and bunkers, and the distance from the golfers location to the flag may be provided to assist the golfer in selecting the correct club. The display may provide close up views of the landing areas and greens and the distance from the golfers location to the flag may be automatically updated as the golfer moves. The device may have a ruggedised weatherproof casing 1 and may be manufactured having buttons or a touch screen pen.

Description

Golfing Satellite NaviEation Device The Invention relates to a device that is used during a game of golf. It comprises of a GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver placed inside a ruggedised Pocket PC that has custoTnised golfing software installed on it. It is a hand held unit for use on golf courses during games enabling the golfer to accurately pinpoint his position on the course using GPS. This then allows the golfer to select the correct club saving time and building confidence during a round.
It's frustrating to hit a perfectly aimed shot. only to leave your ball 10 yards short of the green because you simply chose the wrong club Incorrect club selection can account for 8 - 10 surokes per round. In addition to that estimating the correct distance can take valuable time that could otherwise be used to concentrate on the actual execution of your golf shot Manually. it can take up to 30 seconds per shot to fmd a yardage marker. pace it off and mentally perform the maths to adjust for today's flag location.
This device displays all the information above and Instantly gives you more time to concentrate on your actual shot. The golfer just needs to turn on the device and the GPS satellite determines his location.
These details will pmpomt his exact location on the display screen. These details show the yardage from his location to the flag. which therefore helps him select the correct club to use. including other hazards such as bunkers and waterways.
Accordingiv this rugaedised handheld device will have a unique combination ol a GPS receiver (built inside the unit) with customised golfing software installed on it so that the end user (the golfer, can play and practice with this on the golf course. The graphical display is based upon the actual club's course layout that Is passed on to our programmers who then produce a colour graphical display- for us.
This software is then installed on the device. Once installed on the device the locations are marked out and stored whilst using the GPS receiver to pinpoint the exact position. Once the device is switched on the GPS receiver will pick up this location straight away.
The device will be manufactured out of a ruggedised - a weatherproof/waterproof type of casing - so that it can be used in most weather conditions and mall be able to sustain a drop to the floor in accidents Upon manufacturing this device may may not have buttons on it as a st bus (touch screen pen) can also be used. This will be determined at design stage.
Below is a description of the references made to the drawing in which:
No I shows a Ruggedised Casing No 2 shows a GPS Receiver No 3 shows a Graphical Display (usually in colour) As shown on item no. I this casing is made of ruggedised material. This is in case of accidents out on the course such as dropping the device or wet weather conditions It is designed to protect the device from outdoor user which in this case Is every day As shown on Item no.2 there Is a GPS receiver inside the device. The device receives signals from the satellites The satellite tracks the golfers position and this is then transmitted back to the device where it is calculated mto yardage by the software. Now the goiter can select the correct club to score a perfect shot. Item now shows the Colour Graphical Displav with a view of the entire hole with close up views of landing areas and greens. It automatically changes as the golfer walks along so the golfer can see how many yards away from the flag he is at all times.
