Abstract

Basket apparatus 10 for use as a shopping trolley comprises a basket 12 rotatably connected to a support 14, which may include trolley legs 20 having casters 22. A bearing 16 may allow the basket 12 to rotate through 360 degrees and may accept a variety of shopping baskets. The rotating basket 12 may be formed from a metal mesh material, having a cylindrical wall 30 and a base 32, and may be connected by a slide mechanism 50 to two support struts 18. A wheelchair may also be connected to the support 14 by attachments 40. Rotation of the basket 12 provides a wheelchair user ease of access to its contents. The casters 22 may be provided with brakes. Alternatively, a rotating basket may be used as a display unit without casters.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
"Basket Apparatus" The present invention relates to a basket apparatus used particularly, but not exclusively, as a shopping trolley for connection to a wheelchair to allow easy access to all areas of the basket by the user of the wheelchair.
Conventional basket apparatus for use with a wheelchair consist of a basket of shallow depth which allows the wheelchair user's legs to fit under the basket. However, the difficulty with conventional basket apparatus is that it can be difficult to access all areas of the basket, particularly the areas at the extreme end of the basket, distant from the wheelchair user.
According to the present invention, there is provided basket apparatus for use as a shopping trolley, including a basket and a basket support, the basket being rotatably connected to the basket support.
Preferably, the basket support is in the form of trolley legs having castors attached to the ends of the legs.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Preferably, the basket support further includes attachment means adapted to connect to a wheelchair.
Preferably, the basket is generally of cylindrical form and is capable of rotating about 360 degrees relative to the basket support.
Additionally or alternatively, the basket may be slideably connected to the basket support.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a plan view of one apparatus of the present invention; and Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the apparatus of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings there is illustrated a basket apparatus 10 including a basket 12 and a basket support 14. The basket 12 is rotatably connected to the basket support 14 through a bearing 16, the bearing 16 permitting 360 degree rotation of the basket 12 relative to the basket support 14.
The basket support 14 is formed of two generally Ushaped members 16A and 16B which are joined by struts 18A and 18B. The struts 18A and 18B provide a base for connection of the basket 12 through the bearing 16. The ends of each of the members 16A and
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
16B provide legs 20A, 20B, 20C and 20D which are provided with castors 22A, 22B, 22C and 22D for rotational contact with a ground surface. The legs 20A, 20B, 20C and 20D also elevate the basket 12 from the ground surface.
The basket 12 is generally cylindrical with a wall 30 and a base 32 and is formed of metal mesh material. The base 32 connects with the bearing 16.
The apparatus 10 is adapted to be used with a wheelchair (not shown). The legs 20A and 20B are extended and fit around either side of the wheelchair, with the wheelchair user's legs fitting generally under the basket 12. The legs 20A and 20B are also provided with attachments 40A and 40B which are capable of securing to the frame of the wheelchair.
Additionally, a slide mechanism 50 is provided on the struts 18A and 18B, the slide mechanism 50 connecting the struts 18A and 18B to the bearing 16.
In use, a wheelchair is connected to the basket apparatus 10 using the attachments 40A and 40B which connect to the frame of the wheelchair. The wheelchair user can then manoeuvre the apparatus 10 within a supermarket, the apparatus 10 rolling on the castors 22A-D, and place items into the basket 12.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
The basket 12 can be rotated to allow easy access to the items in the basket 12 by the wheelchair user and additionally, the user may slide the basket 12 toward or away from them using the sliding mechanism 50. This further facilitates access to the basket 12.
Modifications and improvements may be made to the foregoing without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, the basket 12 may be formed of alternative materials such as plastics material.
Also, the basket 12 may be non-circular in crosssection and alternatively the basket could be generally rectangular or hexagonal in cross-section.
Whilst embodiments are described which relate to attachment to a wheelchair, the apparatus 10 may have handle means attached which allow the apparatus 10 to be used as a conventional shopping trolley.
Whilst a circular basket 12 is described, the basket 12 may be a conventional shopping basket and the bearing would be adapted to connect to the conventional shopping basket.
The apparatus could be used to display items for easy access, in which case, the castors 22 may be omitted, or brakes fitted to the castors 22 to prevent the apparatus from rolling.
