Abstract
The frequencies at which mobile phones operate are considered to be hazardous because the antenna must be held close to the head in order to listen to the speaker. By the addition of the ground-planes 1 and 2 the RF radiation is deflected away from the operator's head. The speaker 3 is also relocated to the top of the ground-plane in order to put the antenna further away from the operator's head and eyes. The combination of these improvements allow the operator to use a mobile phone without being exposed to R.F. electromagnetic radiation from the antenna. The ground planes may be added in kit-form to an existing radiotelephone, or they may be attached to or moulded into the casing during manufacture.

Improvements Relating to a Mobile Phone This Invention Relates to, Radiation and the Mobile Phone.
The antenna of the Mobile Phone radiates electromagnetic waves at microwave frequencies and this is now considered to be a danger to the phone operator especially when the phone is held to the ear in order to listen to a caller.
The mobile phone antenna system normally consists of a small vertical element and relies on the phone and the hand of the operator to function as a ground plain or counter poise.
The speaker 3. is usually sited near to the antenna which brings the antenna close to the head of the operator when the phone is being used.
To remove the radiation away from the head of the operator certain modifications to the mobile phone design are necessary.
.. - According to the present invention there are provided the necessary modifications which can be implemented by placing larger additional ground plains between the operator and the antenna and in a position that will reflect the radio waves away from the operator.
And by placing the speaker 3. onto the ground plain 1. it will be further away from the antenna 4. as illustrated in Figure 3.
The ground plains can be provided in either one of two different ways.
First by the addition of external ground plains 1. and 2. to the phone as illustrated in Figure 3. or by making the ground plains an integral part of the structure of the mobile phone by moulding them into plastic at the manufacturing stage.
The improvements relating to a mobile phone antenna system are designed for the purpose of reflecting the electromagnetic waves away from the operators head and to place a reflecting ground plain between the operators head and the radiating element of the antenna system, while still allowing the antenna 4. Figure 3 to radiate efficiently.
The mobile phone speaker 3. is also relocated to a position that takes it further away from the radiating element, to a position near to the top of the hinged ground plain 1. As illustrated at Figure 3.

Page 2.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1, shows the reflecting ground plain 1. with the low profile speaker attached, that is hinged to a second ground plain 2. at the back of the phone.
Figure 2, shows the mobile phone before the invention is applied.
Figure 3, shows the mobile phone in place between the two ground plains that are opened out into the operating mode.
The ground plains are hinged in such a way that the ground plain 1. will also act as a protective cover for the mobile phone, and it will open out and away from the key board of the phone when the phone is being used.
The mobile phone speaker is replaced with a low profile speaker 3. that is attached to the inside of the reflecting ground plain as shown in Figure 1. and Figure 3.
When the invention is to be introduced at the manufacturing stage the speaker can be connected directly to the audio output of the mobile phone.
Where it is intended to used the invention in a kit form in order to modify an existing mobile phone the speaker wires will be fitted with a plug that can be plugged into the socket 5. At the base of the phone. this is not shown in the drawings.
When the phone is in use the top ground plain 1. will be opened out and this will alow the speaker to be placed to the ear, this puts the antenna element on to the opposite side of the hinged ground plain l. making sure that the electromagnetic waves will not reach the head of the operator.
This system will, by placing the reflecting electromagnetic ground plain in a position as illustrated in Figure 3. protect the operator from the microwave radiation and also reflect the electromagnetic radiation away from the head of the operator.
