Abstract

A user may employ a common user name and a common password to gain access to multiple services. In a first approach, the user is permitted to select a user ID that is already assigned to at least one other user. The password chosen by the user, however, must be unique. In a second approach, an intermediary is provided for translating a generic user name and a generic password into a unique value for each respective service. The unique value may be derived from the generic user ID or from a combination of the generic user name, generic password and service identification.
