Abstract
A draughting board, comprising a frame 1 including a paper-edge-engaging lip 6 and a paper hanger 11 mounted at the top of the frame and having paper support rings 12 adapted to engage the top of the sheets of paper allowing each used sheet to be fed around the hanger and behind the back of the sheets. The paper supports are rings 12 which also support a backing sheet 22, which can be held in place, by catches 19, against the paper-edge-engaging lip 6 to secure the paper in use or it can be swung away from the paper-edge-engaging lip allowing release of the paper. Also, the draughting board frame 1 may have marked graduations 7 and have a hoop shaped handle 3 marked with angular graduations 27. The hanger may also include a pivoted plumb bob 25 for angle measurement. An additional backing plate (18, figure 2), may be provided, which pivotally connects to and supports the frame 1 about the axis of the hanger and incorporates a handle 20.
Description
DRAUGHTING BOARD
The present invention relates to a draughting board.
Clip boards are used extensively for simple recording of data, such as in a street comer market survey. However, for surveyors and the like, a simple clip board lacks sophistication which is desirable in for instance measuring and sketching a plan of a house.
The object of the invention is to provide a draughting board, which is an improvement on a clip board.
According to the invention there is provided a draughting board, comprising: * a peripheral frame having a paper-edge-engaging lip extending inwardly from the frame on at least two opposed sides,
* a paper hanger mounted laterally at the top of the frame, the paper hanger having paper supports adapted to engage a plurality of sheets of draughting paper at the top of the paper, whereby one used sheet of paper can be fed around the hanger to be accommodated at the back of the sheets, 'a paper backing for the draughtsman to press on in drawing on a top one of the sheets, the backing being arranged to swing away from the paper-edge engaging lip for release of the paper, and 'means for engaging the paper backing and holding it against the paper-edge engaging lip to hold the paper in draughting use.
The frame can have a hoop-shaped carrying handle. Preferably this is semicircular, with its diameter coincident with the paper hanger. The handle can be marked with angular graduations and the hanger can be provided with a plumb bob pivot, whereby angles can be measured and transferred to the drawing.
The lateral edges of the frame can be provided with a guide for a rule and preferably have linear graduations.
The paper backing can be a rigid sheet of the same size as the paper and provided with like cut-outs for engagement with the paper hanger. Whilst these can be perforations, preferably they are open to an edge of the paper-and the backingwhereby the paper can be passed completely around the hanger, with the paper supports being openable loops connected to the hanger by radial members able to pass through the edge openings in the paper. The loops engage in the cut-outs and the radial members can pass through the edge openings as the sheets are passed around the hanger.
Alternatively or additionally, the paper backing can be a plate pivotally connected to the frame about the axis of the hanger, whereby drawn on sheets-and rigid sheet where provided-can be sandwiched between the plate and the lips of the frame. Such arrangement allows the plate to be swung away from the lips and yet the rigid sheet to remain engaged with the lips so that the draughting board can be stood up for viewing.
A handle can be provided on the rear plate. The handle can incorporate a distance measuring device. Also it can be provided with a guide for guiding drawnon sheets in front of the rear plate. The handle can further incorporate a torch.
To help understanding of the invention, a specific embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure I is a front view of a draughting board of the invention;
Figure 2 is a rear view of the draughting board of Figure 1 ;
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional side view of the board stood up for viewing; and
Figure 4 is a rear view of a second embodiment of the board.
Referring to the drawings, the draughting board there shown has a frame I with a main rectangular part 2 and a semicircular carrying handle 3. The bottom 4 and sides 5 of the rectangle have inwards extending lips 6, which in the case of the sides carry measuring graduations 7. At the outer edge of the graduations, grooves 8 are provided for guiding a rule 9, holding it parallel to the top edge T of paper P held on the board.
Across the top of the rectangle of the frame, coincident with the diameter of the handle 3 is a rod I I for hanging support of the paper. The rod is pivoted to the top of the side 5, and carries support rings 12. These are concentric with the rod and are held in place by radial tongues 14. The rings are openable for attachment of the paper
P, via hinged sections 15 of the rings. The sections are shown open in Figure 3 in outline. Also pivoted to the frame, via spigots 16 at the ends of the rod 11 and lugs 17, is a back plate 18. Catches 19 are provided at the back of the sides 5, for urging the back plate 18 and the paper P in front of it against the frame lips 6.
In use, the top sheet of paper can be drawn on D. If measurements need to be made with a tape, the board can be hung on the user's wrist via the handle, leaving both hands free for measurement. Thus the board never has to be put down and this can save time for the user. When the drawing is complete, the top sheet is fed around the rod 11 and rings 12 to lie at the back of the sheets. To guide the sheet into position on release of the catches 19, a guide 20 is provided. It and the top edge 21 of the back plate 18 are set below the top edge of the paper, whereby the bottom edge of the drawn sheet can be fed in front of the back plate, see arrow A.
The sheets of paper are provided with cut-outs C having a shape complementary to the shape of the rings 12, including the tongues 14. Thus with the rings open and the catches released, sheets of paper can be introduced onto the rings and be retained in front of the back plate by the catches 19.
Normally, in addition to the paper, a backing sheet 22 of card, plastics material or metal, is provided on the rings. It can have the same shape as the paper and be retained by the catches independently of the backing plate. Thus the board can be stood up and the front sheet of drawing viewed, as shown in Figure 3, with the backing plate acting as a back leg for the board.
The guide 20 can be removable from a casing 23, provided at the back of the backing plate and usable as an additional handle. The casing can house a tapeless measuring device 24, to assist in surveying a room for instance. Short distances can be measured by the side graduations 7. As indicated by broken line 25, a plumb can
be pivoted about a transverse bore 26 in the rod 11, whereby one side of the board can be set against a sloping surface and its inclination measured against a scale 27 on the handle.
The board shown in Figure 4, is identical to the one of Figure 2 except the support rings 32. As in the board of Figure 2, the support rings 32 are connected to the hanging support rod 31, by radial tongues. The rings are openable by rotating arcs 34, of the ring, out of the plane of the ring. Paper can then be added or removed from the rings 32. The arcs can then be rotated back into the plane of the rings, thus closing the same. The pivoting section being opposite to the radial tongue to allow rotating of the arc 34, without entanglement on the rod 31. In addition, the handle 43 is provided with a torch 44 in its base 45.
