Abstract

A mobile phone 1, having an earpiece 5 connected to the mobile phone by an electrical cable 4 has ferrite beads 6 surrounding a portion of the cable 4 that is near the earpiece 5.

Description

Improvements To Mobile Phones The present invention is concerned with reducing the amount of radiation entering the head of a mobile phone user who is wearing an ear piece for listening to the mobile
phone.
A mobile phone according to the invention includes an ear piece that is connected to
mobile phone unit by an electrical cable that threads at least one ferrite bead placed near the ear piece.
FIG. 1 illustrates an embodiment of the invention. Connected to mobile phone unit 1 via a cable 2 is a microphone unit 3, and via a continuation cable 4 an ear piece 5 which produces sound. Surrounding cable 4 are ferrite beads 6 that suppress the transmission of radio frequency waves along cable 4. The holes of the beads are filled with plastic material to keep the beads in place. One or more beads 6 my also surround cable 2.

Claims (8)

  1. What is claimed is : 1. A mobile phone including an ear piece that is connected to mobile phone unit by an electrical cable that threads at least one ferrite bead near the ear piece.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows What is claimed is: 1. An elongate cable assembly for use with a mobile phone handset, the cable assembly having a first end thereof comprising an earpiece that converts electrical energy into sound and having a second end thereof comprising a connector for electrically joining the cable assembly to a mobile phone handset, whereby the handset can be remote from the earpiece and the user's head; the cable assembly having conductor paths leading from said connector to said earpiece, for driving the earpiece, each of said conductor paths being provided with a ferrite member, remote from said connector, for reducing radiation entering the user's head via said cable assembly.
  2. 2. A cable assembly according to claim 1 wherein said ferrite member has a hole in it through which a current carrying part of said cable assembly is threaded.
  3. 3. A cable assembly according to claim 1 or 2 including a unit housing a microphone, a first length of cable between said unit and said earpiece and a second length of cable connected between said unit and said connector.
  4. 4. A cable assembly according to any preceding claim including a plurality of ferrite members for reducing radiation entering the user's head via said cable assembly.
  5. 5. A cable assembly according to claim 3 including at least one suppresser using ferrite placed between said microphone housing unit and said earpiece.
  6. 6. A cable assembly according to claim 3 or 5 including at least one suppresser using ferrite placed between said microphone housing unit and said connector.
  7. 7. A cable assembly according to any preceding claim wherein said ferrite member has a hole in it through which a plurality of separate conductors are threaded.
  8. 8. A mobile phone assembly comprising a mobile phone handset having a transmitter aerial and a hands-free kit connected to the handset, the kit comprising a cable leading to an earpiece remote from the handset and there being two electrical paths for energising said earpiece, each of the paths including an inductor for reducing transmission of radio frequency energy from the handset to the earpiece.
