Abstract

The caravan mover (Fig. 1) is powered by mains electricity to drive two pneumatically-tyred wheels through a gearbox and differential. The caravan mover is coupled to the caravan through a ball engaging the socket 12 of the caravan coupling, the mover including a plate 14 which, for reversing, locks out a caravan brake which is engaged by movement of the socket towards the caravan. A lever 16 controls a pivoted portion of plate 14 to engage and disengage the locking out of the caravan brake.

Description

11 Powered Caravan Mover Deseffifflon 2358844 Caravan movers are small
power units about the size of a hand operated lawn mower which, when coupled to either the caravan towing hitch or jockey wheel bracket, improves the handling and manoeuvrability of the caravan. They are usually powered by a 12 volt electric motor with control of it by various types of switches. Power to the motor comes from a car type battery, driving one or two wheels, which are in contact with the ground. Because existing caravan movers are battery operated and heavy, this limits their performance and portability.
According to the present invention, the caravan mover is powered by a mains power electric motor, driving a gearbox, incorporating a differential to a main output shaft, driving two pneumatic wheels. Power to the electric motor is by means of a travelling cable, connected to an electric power supply point.
Controllability of the motor is by two twist-grip switches on the handle of the mover, one is an on-off switch and the other is a reversing switch. Incorporated in the invention is a levered, hinged plate, manually operated for disengaging the caravan brake when reversing it backwards.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: - Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the caravan mover Figure 2 shows a front elevation of the caravan mover Figure 3 shows a plan view of the reverse lever plate Figure 4 shows a side view of the reverse lever plate Figure 5 shows attachment of the mover to the caravan coupling Figure 6 shows toggle bar for tightening of large nut 11.
Referring to the drawings, the caravan mover is made of metal and comprises a main body 6, with handle 2. Electrical power to the mover is by cable 13. The controllability of electric motor 1, is by twist type switch 3, on handles 2. Two large pneumatic wheels 4, give traction on the ground for pushing and pulling of the caravan, while two smaller rear wheels 5, give stability to the mover and also allows for wheeling, when not connected to mains power. Before attaching the mover to the caravan, a reverse plate, with large hole, is placed over the ball, first. This reverse plate has location tabs 18, for correct positioning of coupling and a rear drop-down hinged section 17, which is operated by a cam shaft type leverage system 15. When the caravan coupling is placed onto the ball the plate is then clamped into position by a large nut 11, with toggle bars 20. Because shaft 10 is now locked into coupling 19, rotation and manoeuvrability, of the mover around shaft 10, is by way of bearing housing 9. Reversing or pushing backwards the caravan with the mover is made easier by the fitment of reversing plate 14. When in the closed position, see figure 5 and, making contact with front of caravan chassis and with lever 16 in a vertical position, backward movement of coupling 19 is restricted so the caravan braking system is inoperative. By moving the lever 16 forwards, it drops the rear section of plate 14, downwards, away from the front of the caravan chassis, which in turn allows coupling 19 to collapse and apply the brakes.

Claims (1)

  1. Claims
In accordance with one broad aspect of the present invention, a caravan mover is characterised by the following combinations of features: - Claim 1 A powered caravan mover, powered by means of mains electricity, driving a gear box with a differential, incorporating a reverse plate, for restricting or resuming the braking system of a caravan.
Claim 2 A powered caravan mover as claimed in claim 1, with a reverse plate with hole, incorporating tabs for locating the caravan coupling.
Claim 3 A powered caravan mover as claimed in any proceeding claim, with a reverse plate, incorporating a drop-down hinged section, operated by a cam shaft type leverage system.
