Abstract
A disinfectant/sterilising formulation is provided as a dry powder/solid which comprises a chlorine releasing compound (which will release chlorine on contact with water) so that the formulation, when dissolved in water, produces a near neutral biocidally active solution. The chlorine releasing compound is preferably sodium dichloroisocyanurate and the formulation preferably further comprises an alkali or alkaline metal chlorite (eg sodium chlorite). Release of chlorine dioxide from the chlorite is triggered by the release of chlorine when the formulation is dissolved in water. Chlorine dioxide is a very powerful oxidising agent and an excellent bactericide, which is normally produced by a highly acidic reaction with sodium chlorite. The formulation may also incorporate a buffer, a desiccant (to provide storage stability), a surfactant, a filler (to maintain and bulk the composition), a tableting aid, a sequestrant (to aid effectiveness of formulation if used with hard dilution water) and a corrosion inhibitor. The formulation is primarily intended for use in sterilising medical and dental instuments and as a high level disinfectant in hospital, veterinary and food establishments. It is also intended for areas where the utmost hygiene is required.
Description
2355197 A Powder Formulation for Water Dilution and Subsequent use as a
Sterilant Medical, dental and other instruments are often made of high quality stainless steel and can be cleaned and sterilised between uses by high temperature steam under pressure. In contrast to this many instruments are made of heat-sensitive plastics, rubber, glass and electronic components. For this reason, heat sensitive instruments can only be sterilised by cold chemical germicides. Chemical sterilants presently available have many ethical and toxicological difficulties. The disclosed formula does not.
The formulation provides a method of generating chlorine dioxide in an aqueous liquid in which first of all chlorine is released and that in turn triggers the release of chlorine dioxide from an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chlorite by adding to the aqueous liquid a water soluble solid composition containing a chlorine-releasing compound which in the dry state is stable. Upon addition to the aqueous media chlorine species are produced and subsequently generate chlorine dioxide by reaction with the alkali metal chlorite. The solution formed is very powerful disinfectant and sterilising liquid containing both chlorine dioxide and chlorine species which reduce the risk of formation of resistant bacteria.
The chlorine donor that provides the trigger for the conversion of the alkali metal chlorite at a near neutral pH is sodium dichloroisocyanurate. The powder composition may if necessary contain a substantial proportion of inert solid filler. The formulation may also contain one or more buffers to bring the pH of the aqueous liquid to near neutral and thereafter preserve it.
2 Typical Formulation Preferred Range Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate 5% 1-10% Sodium Chlorite 15% 5-25% Sodium Bicarbonate 5% 1-10% Sodium Phosphate 5% 1-10% Citric Acid 20% 5-50% Sodium Lauryl Sulphate 5% 1-10% Sodium Sulphate 45% 5-50% Thus, this invention provides a novel method of producing an aqueous solution containing chloride dioxide. Chloride dioxide is a very powerful oxidising agent and an excellent bactericide.
It is normally produced by a highly acidic reaction with sodium chlorite. The invention presents a method and a powder formulation which when added to water provides a high concentration of chlorine dioxide in a near neutral formulation. The formulation can also incorporate a surfactant or surfactants, and a corrosion inhibitor or inhibitors.
The formulation is primarily intended for use as.a medical sterilant and high level disinfectant in hospital, veterinary and food establishments, but is also intended for areas where the utmost hygiene is required.
