Abstract

A speed warning system for a road vehicle comprises a receiver unit for installation in the vehicle and arranged to receive a signal (S), upon entering a limited speed zone, which indicates the speed limit within that zone. The receiver unit compares the actual vehicle speed with the speed indicated by the received signal (S) and includes a sound emitter (10) to emit a sound (preferably a repeating spoken message) if the actual vehicle speed exceeds the speed indicated by the received signal (S).

Description

2354362 Vehicle Speed Warning System The present invention relates to a
speed warning system for road vehicles.
A number of systems have been proposed which consist of signal transmitters mounted at intervals along the road, each of which transmits a signal indicating the permitted speed at that location. A signal receiver unit is fitted to each vehicle, to pick up the signals transmitted from the successive transmitters which it passes. In some such systems, it has been proposed that the signal receiver unit acts to limit the speed of the vehicle according to the speed indicated by the received signal: however, this action can prove undesirable in certain circumstances. Also, systems which have been proposed hitherto typically require a very large number of roadside transmitters, to repeatedly remind the vehicle of the prevailing speed limit.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a speed warning system for a road vehicle, the system comprising a receiver unit for installation in the vehicle and arranged to receive a signal, upon entering a limited speed zone, which indicates the speed limit within that zone, the receiver unit being further arranged to compare the actual vehicle speed with the speed indicated by said signal receiver upon entering the limited speed zone, and a sound emitting means arranged to emit a warning sound in the event of the actual vehicle speed exceeding the speed indicated by said signal received upon entering said limited speed zone.
Preferably the sound emitting means is arranged to emit its warning sound at intervals whilst the actual vehicle speed exceeds the speed indicated by the signal received upon entering the limited speed zone. Preferably the sound emitting means comprises an annunciator or voice synthesiser which emits a message such as, for example "correct your speed" or "reduce 2 your speed".
Preferably the receiver unit is set by the signal received upon entering the limited speed zone, then reset by the signal received upon leaving that zone or entering another zone. In this way, a roadside transmitter is only required at the entry or exit of each zone.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a view of the dashboard of a vehicle which is fitted with a speed warning system in accordance with the present invention, and FIGURE 2 consists of front and side views of a roadside speed limit sign which is fitted with a signal transmitter.
is Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings, there is shown the dashboard of a vehicle which is fitted with a speed warning system, including an annunciator or voice synthesiser 10: the annunciator 10 is arranged to emit a message such as "correct your speed" at intervals, whilst the actual vehicle speed remains above the prevailing speed limit.
Referring to Figure 2, each speed limit sign 20 is fitted with a transmitter 22 which transmits signals indicating the local speed limit, which is 30m.p.h. in the example shown. The speed warning system installed in the vehicle comprises a receiver unit which receives the transmitted signals as the vehicle passes the speed limit sign, and therefore as it enters the 30m.p.h. zone. The receiver unit is arranged to be set by the received signals and to compare the actual vehicle speed with the speed limit indicated by that signal: if the actual speed of the vehicle exceeds the indicated speed limit, then the annunciator 10 emits its warning message at intervals, until the actual speed falls below the indicated speed limit.
When the vehicle leaves the limited speed zone, its receiver unit will receive the speed-indicating signal transmitted from the roadside speed limit sign at that 3 position, and be re-set. Similarly, if the vehicle leaves one limited speed zone and enters another zone, the receiver unit is reset to the new speed limit.
The receiver unit of the warning system may be fitted to the back of the speedometer of the vehicle, or to the speedometer cable in order to sense the actual vehicle speed.
It will be appreciated that the speed warning system which has been described acts to give the driver audible warning that he or she is exceeding the speed limit, and accordingly the opportunity to reduce to a correct speed. Moreover, the system only requires a transmitter at the entry or exit of each limited speed zone, and therefore does not require large numbers of transmitters.
Some drivers may be tempted to disable the on-board system. Preferably therefore, the on-board system is arranged to transmit a predetermined signal whilst it is enabled: this permits the police or others to pick this signal up, perhaps using a hand-held receiver unit, to check that the vehicle's speed warning system is operating correctly.
