Description

2338906 PLAYING CARDS This invention relates to playing cards. It relates
particularly to a set of playing cards where the cards may have an alternative purpose without interfering with their use in the conventional way for playing a card game.- 0 In an ordinary pack of playing cards, there are four suits of thirteen cards each making a total of fiftytwo cards. As is well known, a pack is suitable for playing a very large number of different card games. In addition, the pack would also be capable of being used in a completely different way for making a selection of one item from a total of fiftytwo items. This alternative use can be applied without interfering in any way with the usefulness of the pack in playing a card game. The pack can thus be given the possibility of, for exaziple, selecting one or more au:ibers at random in a number ceneration mode.
a According to the invention, there is provided a pack of playing cards where the playing face of the card, in addition to the usual suit and value designation, carries'a number in 0 the range from one to fiftytwo. The numbers may be carried on each card within a circular area which is intended to represent a lottery game ball -,,rhich is marked with the number. The lottery ball image may carry a representation of a highlight reflection on the ball surface to simulate 0 the spherical shape of a lottery ball.
Preferably, in the pack, fortynine of the cards carry the numbers from one to fortynine. The three remaining cards forming the full set may carry representations of lottery game balls which do not include numbers.
The non-playing face of each card may be provided with a conventional card back design that will be common to all of the cards in the pack.
The playing face of the card nay also carry some reference to indicate that the number displayed on t1he ball is positioned in its proper attitude for avoiding errors when 0 bei- read by the user. One suitable reference is the wording 0 Lottery Numbers' being marked alongside the lottery came ball C> 0 representation.
It will be clear that the card pack, when not in use for a card gaime, will be most suitable for an alternative purpose in selectino numbers at random for a lottery came. Since the 0 0 cards are intended to be selected by the user when in a face downward position, a person dealing the cards has no control over the numbers to be chosen.
3y way of example, a particular embodiment of the invention -.All now be described with reference to the acco,-.-ipanyino drawinlos, in which:
0 Figure I shows a pack of fiftytwo playing cards with each one carrying on its playin.-., face a lottery game number, 0 0 0 L"ieure 2 depicts the playin- face of one card from each of four suits, and, -ioure 3 shows the non-playing face coi-x.;or, to each of the cards in the pack.
As shown in Figure 1, a pack 1 of playing cards comprises a small stack of fiftlytwo cards each having a common card back desion on the non- playing face but different suit and value desionations on the card playing face.
Fioure 2 shows some examples of cards of the four different suits Clubs, Spades, Diamonds and Hearts. The cards also have the usual different value designations that are used in playing the many conventional card games. The Fi-gure also shows on each card 2, a lottery ball representation 3 which carries an appropriate lottery game number 4. The lottery game numbers 4 will be selected by a user of the playing card pack by taking the required number of cards from the pack when it is held in a face downward position. The user of the pack will thus be unable to see the selected lottery game number 4 until the card bearing the number is turned over. This provision thus ensures that the number is selected at random and that the user of the pack will have no knowledge of the selected number until the card is turned over.
In order to improve the appearance of the lottery ball representations 3, these are printed as far as possible to look spherical and each image carries a highlight reflection 6 0 to enhance the effect of a sphere shape. To reduce the risk of a user misreading a number indicated on the card, an indicator 7 is marked alongside each ball representation 3. In the present embodiment, this indicator 7 is the printed wording 'Lottery Numbers'.
Figure 3 depicts the non-playing face 8 of each of the fiftytwo cards in the pack.
In use of the playing card pack of the invention, the pack is capable of being handled perfectly normally for a conventional card came. WThen requiring to select a croup of numbers for a lottery gamne, a user will shuffle the cards in the pack and deal six cards face downward on a table surface. These cards when turned over will then disclose six numbers for a lottery came selection. if any blank card has been 0 drawn, a further card can be taken from the pack to make up the total of six.
The user will thus have miade a selection of six lottery numbers in a completely random m.anner from the total of fortynine numbers available. In miaking a written record of a these numbers, the risk of the user makina an error in transcribino the number that is displayed is able to be reduced by use of the indicator 7 that is marked alongside each ball representation 3. The fi-ure 'six' is thus unlikely to be misread as a L"iloure 'nine'.
