Abstract

A cartridge based menu driven portable electronic reading device (1) featuring a large back-lit display screen (5), easy to use controls (4,6,7), and removable card storage means (2) bearing data for display. Information is displayed by way of a screen (5) whose brightness is varied according to the ambient lighting conditions as measured by an optical sensor device (8). Each cartridge (2) carries an information bar (3) which indicates the age range suitability (9), the book content type (10) and a colour code relevant to the book type (11). A book mark facility is provided for up to ten cartridges. The device resembles a conventional paperback book and is used in a similar way, but has the advantage of being easier to read by visually impaired persons.

Description

2332073 THE INVENTION RELATES TO A CARTRIDGE BASED READING DEVICE.
Through discussions with my wife, who is a home care assistant I became aware of the difficulties that handicapped, infirm and poorly sighted people have, regarding reading conventional paperback books. 1 have therefore designed a product which addresses these needs and also has a much wider appeal.
According to the present invention, the unit is to be approximately the same size and weight as an average paperback book. It comprises an A.B. S. plastic case, a screen for viewing and the buttons for the next page, previous page and on/off. A circuit board inside the case controls the output to the screen, input from the buttons as described, access to the menu system and access to the cartridge system. The cartridges to be used with the unit contain the information to be read by the user. A light sensitive resistor is mounted on the main casing enabling rapid screen brightness adjustments automatically. A bookmark facility will enable retention of the details supplied by up to ten cartridges. Cartridges will be printed with an information bar. The bar will show age range suitability, book type (for example - science fiction) and a colour relevant to the book type.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- Figure 1 illustrates the main unit Figure 2 illustrates the cartridge Referring to figures I and 2.
Z The cartridge (2) is inserted into the main unit (1) through the cartridge slot (8) mounted on its rear edge. The unit can now be switched on with the 'On/Off button (4). An L.C.D. display (5) is mounted on the main unit. Pages of information may be accessed with the 'Back' (6) and 'Next' (7) keys mounted on the lower part of the base unit. Access to the menu system for changing font sizes, name entry, and other functions is gained by pressing the 'Back' (6) and 'Next' (7) keys simultaneously. Options are selected by stepping through With the 'Next' (7) key and selecting with the Back'key. Exit from the menu system is achieved by depressing both keys simultaneously again. The light sensitive resistor (8) is mounted on the main unit (1). Each cartridge to be used will include an information bar (3) as illustrated in C Figure 2. The bar (3) will show age range suitability (9), book type (10) (For example - science fiction) and a colour relevant to the book type (11) ( examples include pink for romance, black for occult).
