Abstract

An apparatus for recording sound having a function of recording stereophonic sound includes a sound input source (50a, 50b), a sound localizing unit (52) for splitting and modulating the sound input through the input source (50a, 50b) so that a stereophonic sound effect can be generated, and a recording unit (54) for recording a stereophonic sound output from the sound localizing unit (52). Therefore, it is possible to hear stereophonic sound with a sound reproducing apparatus constituted of a two-speaker audio system without an additional apparatus by applying a sound localizing process to the sound recording apparatus.

Description

APPARATUS FOR RECORDING SOUND HAVING FUNCTION OF RECORDING STEREOPHONIC SOUND AND METHOD THEREFOR The present invention relates to an apparatus for recording sound having a function of recording stereophonic sound, and more particularly, to an apparatus for recording sound having a function of recording stereophonic sound by which it is possible to process an input sound signal by sound localization and record the sound signal on a sound recording medium in order to realize a stereophonic sound effect through three dimensional diffusion of a sound source in an apparatus for reproducing sound comprising a two-speaker audio system and a method therefor.
Stereophonic sound, unlike monophonic sound in which spacially diffused sound is recorded by a microphone, generates a stereophonic acoustic effect through three dimensional diffusion of a sound source by reproducing the sound recorded on more than two channels, thus creating a sense of direction and distance to the sound. In general, a stereophonic acoustic effect is achieved by two channels in stereo phonograph, a stereo magnetic tape, and a stereo radio broadcast. It is preferable to use three or more channels in order to create a more effective stereophonic acoustic effect.
A cassette recorder and a video camera have sound recording capabilities for recording, on a sound recording medium, sound obtained from nature, sound reproduced from another sound recording medium, or sound transmitted from a broadcast station. Meanwhile, a sound reproducing apparatus comprised of a two-speaker audio system for reproducing a sound signal recorded on the sound recording medium or a sound signal transmitted from a broadcast station is named by a cassette player or a television receiver including left and right speaker outputs. In particular, the stereo sound recording apparatus and the stereo sound reproducing apparatus divide sound to be recorded and reproduced into more than two channels and record or reproduce the sound.
It is an aim of embodiments of the present invention to provide a sound recording apparatus having a function of recording stereophonic sound by which it is possible to hear sound localized sound on a general sound reproducing apparatus without an additional apparatus, by applying a sound localization apparatus to a sound recording apparatus and recording sound localized sound on a sound recording medium.
It is another aim of embodiments of the present invention to provide a method for recording stereophonic sound using the above apparatus.
According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a sound recording apparatus, comprising a sound input source, a sound localizing unit for splitting and modulating the sound input through the input source so that a stereophonic sound effect can be generated, and a recording unit for recording a stereophonic sound output from the sound localizing unit.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a method, comprising the steps of: splitting and modulating the sound input through an input source; and recording the splitted and modulated sound on the left and right sound recording channels of a sound recording medium.
In embodiments of the invention the stereophonic sound is splitted and modulated according to a reference distance between two speakers of a sound reproducing unit.
For a better understanding of the invention, and to show how embodiments of the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows the structure of a sound reproducing apparatus comprised of a general two-speaker audio system; Figure 2 shows a sound reproducing apparatus comprised of a two-speaker audio system to which a sound localizing apparatus is attached; Figure 3 shows the structure of the audio system portion shown in Figure 2 in greater detail; Figure 4 shows the simple structure of a sound recording apparatus; Figure 5 shows a sound recording apparatus having a function of recording stereophonic sound according to an embodiment of the present invention; Figure 6 shows another embodiment of a sound recording apparatus according to the present invention; and Figure 7 describes a method for recording stereophonic sound according to the present invention.
Referring to Figure 1 showing the structure of a sound reproducing apparatus comprised of a general two speaker audio system, the sound reproducing apparatus is comprised of an audio system unit 10, a left speaker 12, and a right speaker 14. Here, the sound recording apparatus and the sound reproducing apparatus having a two-speaker audio system can be configured in combination as shown in Table 1. Namely, the sound reproducing apparatus for reading sound recorded on the sound recording medium and outputting it to a speaker is combined to the sound recording apparatus for recording the stereophonic sound on the sound recording medium as shown in the following Table 1.

Namely, the sound recording apparatus such as the video camera is connected to a sound reproducing apparatus such as a TV set by a coaxial cable or cables. A sound signal recorded with a video signal photographed by the video camera is reproduced by the sound reproducing apparatus such as the TV set.
A sound recording apparatus such as the video camera for recording stereophonic sound records stereophonic sound on a sound recording medium with two microphones.
However, the sound reproduced through a sound reproducing apparatus such as the TV set constructed of the twospeaker audio system cannot reproduce -the stereophonic sound effect recorded on the sound recording medium as stereophonic sound. This is because the split effect of the stereophonic sound is not remarkable during recording and the split effect of the stereophonic sound reproduced from the sound recording medium cannot be given since the distance separating the two speakers of the sound reproducing apparatus is narrow.
Therefore, to solve the above drawback, a sound localizing apparatus is attached to the sound reproducing apparatus comprised of the two-speaker audio system. The sound localizing apparatus loaded in the sound reproducing apparatus comprised of the two-speaker audio system splits the reference stereophonic sound recorded on the sound recording medium creates an effective three dimensional sound, modulates the sound signal so as to have a three dimensional sense of distance and direction and outputs the sound signal to a speaker. The sound localizing apparatus modulates the reference stereophonic sound reproduced from the recording medium, so that a user can hear it as stereophonic sound of a three dimensional space. Namely, the distance between two speakers loaded in the sound reproducing apparatus is imaginarily widened.
A Dolby surround stereophonic sound technology constructed of four surround sound channels for reproducing two channels for front, left, and right speakers, a center channel for a central speaker, and a rear signal has already been put to practical use as a method for realizing an effective stereophonic sound effect. In the present invention, a sound localization technology is applied to the sound recording apparatus in order to give a three dimensional stereophonic sound effect in the sound reproducing apparatus comprised of the two-speaker audio system.
Therefore, a user can hear stereophonic sound even with the sound reproducing apparatus comprised of the twospeaker audio system since the distance between the twospeakers is imaginarily widened by adding the sound localization apparatus to the sound reproducing apparatus such as the TV and by splitting, modulating, and reproducing the stereophonic sound recorded on the sound recording medium, as shown in Figure 2.
Figure 2 shows the sound reproducing apparatus comprised of the two-speaker audio system to which the sound localization apparatus is attached.
The sound reproducing apparatus shown in Figure 2 includes an audio system unit 20, a left speaker 22, and a right speaker 24. Here, reference numerals 22' and 24' denote virtual speakers, having a distance between which is imaginary and can be obtained by adding the sound localization apparatus.
Figure 3 shows the structure of the audio system unit 20 shown in Figure 2 in greater detail. The audio system unit 20 includes a reproducing unit 32 for reproducing a sound signal recorded on a sound recording medium 30, a sound localizing unit 34 for creating a streophonic sound effect by splitting and modulating the sound reproduced in the reproducing unit 32 and by generating the effect creating a distance between the virtual speakers 22' and 24', and an amplifier 36 for amplifying the sound signal output from the localizing unit 34 and outputting the amplified sound signal to the speaker 22 and 24.
The sound reproducing apparatus comprised of the twospeaker audio system shown in Figure 2 can generate a stereophonic sound effect by splitting and modulating the reference a stereophonic sound recorded on the sound recording medium 30, thus imaginarily widening the distance between the two speakers by attaching the sound localizing apparatus.
However, since an additional sound localizing apparatus 34 must be attached to the sound reproducing apparatus, additional expenses are required for hardware and the quality of sound may deteriorate during reproduction.
Therefore, when it is necessary to add the additional sound localizing apparatus, an apparatus to which the sound localizing apparatus is applied must be carefully selected.
Considering that the sound reproducing apparatus comprised of the two-speaker audio system is spread more widely than the sound recording apparatus for recording the stereophonic sound, it is more effective for the sound localizing apparatus to be applied to the sound recording apparatus than to the sound reproducing apparatus. This is because stereophonic sound is audible without an additional apparatus in a general sound reproducing apparatus for reproducing the sound signal recorded on the sound recording medium since the sound recording apparatus including the sound localizing apparatus splits and modulates the sound to be recorded and records it on the sound recording medium so that a stereophonic sound effect can be generated during reproduction. Therefore, a technology of adding the sound localizing apparatus to the sound recording apparatus or applying the sound localizing apparatus to a newly developed sound recording apparatus is required.
Figure 4 shows the simple structure of a sound recording apparatus.
The sound recording apparatus shown in Figure 4 includes a recording unit 42 for recording sound signals which are input through two microphones 40a and 40b on a recording medium.
However, as mentioned above, the sound signals recorded on the sound recording medium cannot generate a stereophonic sound effect since the distance between the two speakers of the sound reproducing apparatus constructed by the two-speaker audio system is short.
Figure 5 shows a sound recording apparatus having a function of recording stereophonic sound according to the present invention.
The sound recording apparatus having the function of recording stereophonic sound shown in Figure 5 includes left and right microphones 50a and 50b, a sound localizing unit 52 for splitting, modulating, and outputting the stereophonic sound signals input through the left and right microphones 50a and 50b, and a sound recording unit 54 for recording the sound signal processed in the sound localizing unit 52 on the sound recording medium.
Figure 6 shows the sound recording apparatus according to another embodiment of the present invention.
The sound recording apparatus includes a sound localizing unit 62 for splitting and modulating sound signals (L and R) output from a reproducing apparatus 60 comprised of the two-speaker audio system unit 62 and a sound recording unit 64 for recording the sound signals (L' and R') output from the sound localizing unit 62 on the sound recording medium.
Figure 7 describes a method for recording stereophonic sound according to the present invention.
The stereophonic sound is input through the two microphones (step s70).
The stereophonic sound input through the microphones is splitted and modulated (step s72).
Here, stereophonic sound is splitted and modulated according to the reference distance between the twospeakers by the sound reproducing apparatus comprised of the two-speaker audio system.
The splitted and modulated sound is recorded on the left and right sound recording channels of the sound recording medium (step s74).
In the sound recording apparatus having the function of recording stereophonic sound according to the present invention, it is possible to hear stereophonic sound with a sound reproducing apparatus comprised of a two-speaker audio system without an additional apparatus by applying a sound localization process to the sound recording apparatus.

Claims (5)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A sound recording apparatus, comprising: a sound input source; a sound localizing unit for splitting and modulating the sound input through the input source so that a stereophonic sound effect can be generated; and a recording unit for recording a stereophonic sound output from the sound localizing unit.
  2. 2. A method, comprising the steps of: splitting and modulating the sound input through an input source; and recording the splitted and modulated sound on the left and right sound recording channels of a sound recording medium.
  3. 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the stereophonic sound is splitted and modulated according to a reference distance between two speakers of a sound reproducing unit.
  4. 4. A sound recording apparatus substantially as herein described, with reference to Figure 5 or 6.
  5. 5. A sound recording method substantially as herein described with reference to Figure 7.
