Abstract

In a T.V. licensing system intended to replace a paper-based system a potential viewer purchases a smart card which is valid for a predetermined time period. Insertion of a valid card into a television receiver unscrambles a picture signal so that a clear picture is displayed. An invalid card will give a scrambled picture.
