Abstract

A high security door comprises a steel sheet 12 sandwiched between two solid wood 10, 11, which may also be arranged to conceal all visible edges of the sheet 12. Hinges 15 are welded to the sheet 12, as are the lock casings (21, figure 5) for housing the dead locks 16. Dog-bolts 22 may be provided, welded to the hinge side of the metal sheet 12. An intumescent seal may be provided in a groove (18, figure 2) around all edges of the door. Also disclosed is a steel aperture frame clad in wood.

Description

WOOD AND METAL SECURITY DOORSET This invention relates to a wood and metal security doorset primarily for domestic use but also suitable for some commercial uses. A doorset is the term used to describe a door and frame together.
Security doors and frames are traditionally made either of metal, wood or synthetic materials. Metal doors are the strongest, but not aesthetically pleasing enough to be suitable for the home. Wooden doors are far more attractive for domestic use, but are not as strong as the metal doors. I aimed to design a door and frame that would look like quality wood, but would have the strength of metal, in this case steel, incorporated into the doorset.
The Door.
According to the present invention a door where there is a metal sheet "sandwiched" in the centre of two seperate solid wood door leaves. On the visible edge of the door, that is the opening edge where the locks are located, the steel is slightly recessed and it is concealed by a wood infi 11.
The Frame.
According to the present invention a door frame which comprises of a metal (steel) skeleton, which is concealed by solid wood on the visible edges.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a horizontal cross-section of the door and frame, specifying the wood and steel areas.
Figure 2 shows a vertical cross section of the door only showing the central metal plate between the two solid wood leaves.
Figure 3 shows the construction of the door drawn three dimensionally.
Figure 4 shows the construction of the frame drawn three dimensionally.
Figure 5 shows the lock edge of the door, without the locks, but the lock casings are drawn in.
Referring to the drawings the doorset comprises of both door 20 and frame 19. Figure 1 shows a horizontal crosssection of the door and frame together.
The door comprises of a metal (steel) central sheet 12, which can be made as thick as required, in between a solid wood leaf facing inwards 10, and an outside solid wood leaf 11. These solid wood leaves of the door can be patterned as required to any door design, or even cut out to allow glass panes to be inserted.
The door is mounted to the frame using 4 or more strong hinges 15. These hinges welded to the central metal sheet 12 as shown in Figure 3. The other side of the hinges screw to the door frame. The advantage will be that the hinges will be invisible when the door is shut, thus making it virtually impossible for anyone to cut through them.
Also welded to the central metal sheet 12 are 4 dog-bolts 22, as shown in Figure 3. These lock into the frame when the door is shut. These dog-bolts are randomly spaced to make it difficult for anyone to locate where they are in order to cut them.
The door is locked by at least 2 multi-bolt dead locks 16 as shown in Figure 3. These dead locks are mounted to the inner metal sheet inside the lock casings 21 as shown in Figure 5. The lock casings 21 are welded to the inner metal sheet. The advantage of having the locks behind the steel sheet is that they are protected from attack or tampering from outside.
The door edges, top, bottom and sides, have a groove 18 cut to fit an intumescent smoke and fire seal, as shown in Figure 2 The frame 19 is constructed of solid wood 13 around a metal skeleton 14 as shown in Figure 1. The construction of the frame is shown in Figure 4.

Claims (8)

1. A door where there is a metal sheet "sandwiched" in the centre of two seperate solid wood door leaves.
2. A frame which comprises of a metal (steel) skeleton, which is concealed by solid wood on the visible edges.
3. A door as claimed in Claim 1, where the metal sheet is slightly recessed from the inner and outer wood leaves, on the visible lock edge, so that the metal can be concealed by a wood infill.
4. A door as claimed in Claim 1, where the hinges are mounted onto the metal (steel) sheet, in order to conceal the hinges.
5. A door as claimed in Claim 1, where the dog-bolts are mounted onto the metal (steel) sheet, in order to strengthen the security of the door.
6. A door as claimed in Claim 1, where the locks are mounted inside metal lock casings, and protected from outside attack by being behind the inner metal (steel) sheet.
7. A door as claimed in Claim 1, which has a groove cut around all edges to fit an intumescent smoke and fire seal.
8. A door and frame substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1-5 of the accompanying drawings.
