Abstract

A housing, suitable for a radiation transmitter and receiver 6, comprises a housing portion 3 and a lens 12 formed as one piece. The lens 12 and housing portion 3 are made of the same material. The lens 12 may be a Fresnel lens and the housing portion 3 and lens 12 may be formed by injection moulding using polyphenylene oxide. A metal partition 7 and metal lining to the housing may be provided to provide electromagnetic shielding. The housing may be used in a radar system mounted in a vehicle, which measures the relative distance and speed between the said vehicle and other vehicles.

Description

HOUSING FOR A RADIATION TRANSMITTER AND RECEIVER The invention relates to a housing for a radiation transmitter and receiver, and in particular to a housing for a radiation transmitter and receiver used in a distance measuring device for a motor vehicle.
Such a housing may be used to accommodate a distance-controlled travelling-speed regulator in a motor vehicle. It accommodates a radar transmitter and receiver together with an associated electrical and electronic circuit arrangement. The distance-measuring device is used to measure the distance from and, if applicable, the relative speed in relation to a vehicle travelling ahead or an obstacle located ahead in the direction of travel and thus to regulate the travelling speed of the motor vehicle, as described in EP 0 612 641 Al.
Housings known from practical operations for radar measuring devices on motor vehicles have walls made of metal, and the housing wall that is directed forwards is provided with one or two openings into which a respective lens is inserted, is sealed with a seal and is secured. The housing is expensive in terms of construction and its assembly is time-consuming.
The invention seeks to provide a housing which can be produced in an inexpensive manner, is simple to assemble and can be sealed with ease.
According to the present invention, there is provided a housing for a radiation transmitter and receiver comprising: a cover portion which surrounds the transmitter and receiver; and a lens means for the radiation, the lens means being made of the same material, and being formed in one piece with the cover portion.
Advantageous further developments of the invention are set out in the subclaims. In addition to the inexpensiveness of production, the invention particularly enables the storage and stock-keeping of replacement parts to be simplified on account of the small number of component parts required for the housing according to the invention.
For a better understanding of the present invention, and to show how it may be brought into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows an exploded perspective representation of a housing in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 shows a perspective representation of a cover portion of the housing shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 shows a side view of the cover portion shown in Figure 2; Figure 4 shows a view from the rear of the cover portion shown in Figure 2; and Figure 5 shows a sectional view of the cover portion shown in Figure 2.
The invention will now be described in relation to a housing for a distance measuring device for a motor vehicle.
A housing 1 of a distance-measuring device for a motor vehicle essentially consists of a lower housing portion 2 and a box-shaped cover portion 3 which is slipped onto the lower housing portion 2 in the assembled state. A circumferential edge of the lower housing portion 2 and the lower edge of the cover portion 3, in each case, lie in one plane and are provided with a circumferential groove into which a seal 4 is inserted. This planar seal seals in an effective manner and is easy to produce. Pressure compensation with the surrounding atmosphere can be effected in a simple manner with a seal pellet, which is known and is not therefore represented here. Said pellet consists of a disc made of an air-permeable, but not water-permeable, woven material, a steel disc and a rubber ring for the purposes of securement in the housing wall.
A transmitting and receiving element 6 for radar radiation, a metal partition wall 7 and a printed circuit board or card 8 are arranged in the interior of the housing. The partition wall 7 and the printed circuit board are held in lateral guide grooves 10 and 11 respectively in the lower housing portion 2.
The printed circuit board 8 bears the electrical and electronic circuit components of the radar distance-measuring device and, if applicable, also circuit components of the travelling-speed regulator.
These circuit arrangements are not represented in detail here, since they are known per se and are not affected by the invention.
By way of a connector 9 power is supplied to the circuit arrangements which are contained in the housing 1 and signals are exchanged with the motor vehicle, in particular with the travelling-speed regulator of the motor vehicle - which is also not further represented here.
Provided in the uppermost side wall of the cover portion 3 there is a lens 12, which here is only indicated by means of a broken line, since it is not possible to identify this readily from without visually. Further details of the lens 12 are given with reference to Figures 2, 4 and 5. The lens 12 represented here lies at the top, although a housing 1 assembled on a motor vehicle is positioned such that the lens 12 faces towards the front in the direction of travel of the motor vehicle.
The lens 12 and the cover portion 3 are formed in one piece and are produced together, for example by injection-moulding. They are made of a material which is permeable to radar rays, yet not permeable to electromagnetic radiation in the visible range, and which affects the ray path of the radar radiation. The radar radiation is focused through the lens 12. As can be seen from the drawing, the lens 12 is formed here as a Fresnel lens. A suitable material is the plastics material PPO (polyphenylene oxide), for example as modified and commercially available as Noryl 731.
For the purpose of screening off electromagnetic radiation - in addition to the screening provided by means of the metal partition wall 7 - the cover portion 3 can be coated with metal on its inner walls, with the exception of the area of the lens 12, or can be lined with metal sheets, of aluminium for example.
In the case of the exemplary embodiment which was described above, the cover portion 3 has one lens 12.
It can, however, also be provided with two lenses, that is, a first lens for the radar radiation which is emitted and the second lens for the radar radiation which is reflected at an object and is received. The production and assembly of a housing with such a cover portion that has two lenses likewise only necessitate little outlay.
