Abstract
A television camera security system has a plurality of camera units e.g. 10, 20 each with a video camera and a modulator. The modulators are arranged to modulate the video output signal of the respective camera onto r.f. carriers of different frequencies. The camera units are connected to a main unit 30 by respective coaxial cables e.g. 11,21, the main unit 30 having a common output connectable to the r.f. input of a television set 50 or of a VCR 40.
Description
T.V. Camera Security System
The present invention relates to a television camera security system.
Close circuit television (CCTV) systems are nowadays widely used for security purposes. However, such systems require the use of equipment dedicated to the purpose and permanently installed in the premises to be protected.
I have now devised a television camera security system which can be installed relatively easily and at relatively low cost, such that it can be installed and used by a householder in the home.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a television camera security system which comprises a plurality of camera units each comprising a video camera and a modulator, the modulators of the different camera units modulating the video output signals of the respective cameras onto r.f. carriers of different frequencies, and a main unit to which the camera units are connected over respective coaxial cables, the main unit having a common output connectable to the r.f. input of a television set or VCR associated with the television set.
It will be appreciated that the user can tune selected channels of this television set to the signals from the different camera units. Preferably the main unit has an additional input connectable to the usual television aerial.
Accordingly, using the conventional channel selector of the television set, the user can select any of the usual television channels (received from the aerial), or the view from any of the camera units of the security system.
Preferably the power for the camera units is supplied to them over the respective coaxial cables which feed the r.f.
signals to the main unit. Preferably this power is provided as a low d.C. Voltage to the main unit from a transformer/rectifier unit powered from the mains the arrangement therefore simplifies the cabling required for the system.
It will be appreciated that the security system is simple to install. The camera units can be positioned at desired locations around the home or other premises, and used to view the exterior or interior of the premises. For example, the camera unit can be mounted on a window cill or other convenient position within the premises, but directed to view the exterior through the window.
Preferably each camera unit comprises a base from which a flexible stalk projects, and a head containing the video camera. The base can be rested on any convenient shelf or other surface, or fixed to a wall, and then the stalk bent to direct the camera at the required field of view.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompany drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a schematic illustration of a television camera security system in accordance with the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a diagram to show the electrical circuits of one of the camera units and of the main unit of the system of Figure 1;
FIGURE 3 is a front view of one of the camera units of the system;
FIGURE 4 is a side view of the camera unit; and
FIGURE 5 is an illustration, similar to Figure 1, of the system, shown with the camera units enclosed in respective housings.
Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings, there is shown a security system which comprises a plurality of video camera units e.g. 10, 20 connected by coaxial cables e.g. 11, 21 to a main unit 30 which is in turn connected in the example shown, to a video cassette recorder (VCR) 40 by a coaxial cable 41.
Alternatively, the cable 41 may connect the unit 30 directly into a domestic television set 50.
As shown in Figure 2, each of the video camera units e.g. 10, 20 comprises a COD camera. COD and a modulator M to which the output of the is passed. The modulators of the different camera units modulate the video signals of the respective cameras onto r.f. carriers of different frequencies.
The main unit 30 provides a junction for the r.f. signals from the plurality of camera units: thus, different channels of the television set 50 can be tuned to the r.f. outputs of the different camera units. As shown in Figure 2, the main unit 30 includes a circuit for connecting its inputs, from the video camera units, to its output 31 which is connected via the cable 41 to the television set (or to the VCR, in turn connected to the television set in the usual manner). The main unit 30 also has an input 32 for connection to the usual television aerial, and this is also connected to the output of the unit.
A d.c. power supply for each of the video camera units e.g. 10, 20 is provided over the coaxial cables e.g. 11, 21.
Thus, as shown in Figure 2, a 12 volt d.c. supply is connected to the circuit of the main unit 30 and via this circuit to the coaxial cables 11, 21 and through these cables to the respective video camera units. Preferably this d.c. supply is provided by a transformer/rectifier unit powered from the mains supply.
The camera units e.g. 10, 20 may be positioned where desired by the user, around his home or other premises. In the example shown in Figure 1, camera unit 10 is mounted to view the exterior of the home and camera unit 20 is positioned to view a baby's cot. As shown in Figure 1 and also in Figures 3 and 4, each camera unit may comprise a base 14 to which a head 15, which includes the camera is mounted by means of a flexible stalk 16: the base 14 may be placed on an appropriate shelf or window cill, or fixed to an upright wall and the stalk bent in order to direct the camera at the required field of view.
If desired, and as shown in Figure 5, each camera unit may be enclosed within a housing e.g. 18, 28, the housing having a transparent window behind which the camera is aligned.
It will be appreciated that the system which has been described is relatively inexpensive and simple to install and use, in particular making use of the domestic television set.
Using the conventional channel selector of the television set, the user can select any of the usual television channels (received from the aerial), or the view from any of the camera units. The system requires a minimum of cabling consisting primarily of a simple flexible coaxial cable running from the main unit 30 to each camera unit.
