Abstract

A portable device for determining the strength of soil samples, comprises a mechanical drive 3 for driving a penetration rod 1 with a conical tip 2 at a selected speed into a soil sample 6, means 5 for measuring penetration load of the conical tip into a soil sample 6, means 4 for measuring the penetration depth of the conical tip into the soil, means enabling a continuous recording of the penetration load and depth to be made, and a mechanism 7 for releasing the penetration rod to fall under its own weight. The conical tip 2 may be replaced by conical tips of other shapes and sizes.

Description

A PORTABLE SOIL STRENGTH MEASURING DEVICE This invention relates to a device for deducing the strength of soil.
The most commonly used soil classification tests are the Atterberg limit tests. These simple tests provide measurement of the water content of soil at two rather crudely specified strengths.
According to the present invention there is a device comprising of a mechanically driven penetration rod (with interchangeable conical tips), a means for measuring penetration load of the conical tip into a soil sample, a means of measuring the penetration depth of the conical tip into the soil, a means of enabling a continuous recording of the penetration load and depth to be made and a mechanism for releasing the penetration rod to fall under its own weight.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 shows schematically (side elevation) the soil testing device Referring to the drawing the device comprises of a penetration rod (1) with interchangeable conical tips of various sizes and shapes (2), a means of driving the penetration rod in the vertical direction at specified speeds (2), a means of measuring the vertical displacement rate of the penetrating rod (4), a means of continuously measuring the penetration force (5) generated as the cone penetrates the soil sample (6) and a means of releasing the penetration rod to fall under the self weight of the rod and cone assemblage (7).
In order to perform a penetration test a sample of soil (6) is placed on the load measuring platform (5) and the load and displacement measurement devices are zeroed. A penetration velocity is selected and the penetration rod (1) and cone (2) assemblage are driven continuously into the soil sample. During the penetration the vertical displacement transducer (4) and the load transducer (5) provide a continuous record of the respective displacement and penetration force.

Claims (6)

1 A portable soil strength testing device comprising of a mechanically driven penetration rod (with interchangeable conical tips), a means for measuring penetration load of the conical tip into a soil sample, a means of measuring vertical displacement of the conical tip into the soil sample, a means of enabling a continuous recording of the penetration load and depth to be made and a mechanism for releasing the penetration rod to fall under its own weight.
2 A soil strength testing device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein a means of vertically translating the penetration rod at a selected uniform speeds is provided.
3 A soil strength testing device as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 wherein a means is provided to measure the penetration force as the penetration rod and cone assemblage is driven into the soil sample.
4 A soil strength testing device as claimed in Claim 2 or Claim 3 wherein a means of monitoring the vertical displacement of the penetration rod is provided.
5 A soil strength testing device as claimed in Claim 4 wherein a means is provided to continuously record the vertical displacement of the penetration rod and cone assemblage and the penetration loads generated by driving this assemblage into a soil sample.
6 A soil strength testing device substantially as described herein with reference to Figure 1 in the accompanying drawing.
