Abstract

229,356. Compare, A. Aug. 20, 1923. Combined with and convertible into wireless receivers. - Wireless re ceiving apparatus is combined with or carried on a walking-stick, umbrella, or like article. Fig. 4 shows the upper part of a stick in cross section, and Fig. 5 shows the aerial extended. The body of the stick comprises an ebonite or like tube a with a metal spike at its lower end to form an earth connection. The upper part is wound with a coil c, connected at its lower end c<1> to the earth spike. A brass tube d telescoping within the stick has an outwardly-turned tongued' which slides in a longitudinal slot in the stick and makes adjustable contact with the bare inner surface of the coil, thus providing for the tuning of the set. The brass tube d is rigidly connected to the knob h which is hollow and has a removable upper part so as to house the telephones when not in use. The crystal detector is mounted on one earpiece, and the telephones are connected by plug connectors and flexible leads, so as to form a circuit from the upper end of the tube d through the detector and phones to an earth wire. The aerial structure comprises a vertical rod e with four horizontal arms f hinged at its upper end, Fig. 5, the lower end having a plug e<1> and shoulder e<2> by which it is secured to the tube d. The arms f are hinged to a block f<1> having oppositely-projecting aligned pins f<2>, f<3> either of which may be inserted in the upper end of the rod e. When the aerial is not in use, the. block f<1> is reversed, the arms f then falling around the rod e. This is then removed from the tube d and re-inserted therein in reversed position, thus enclosing the collapsed aerial within the stick. The coil c may be protected by a cloth cover, or it may be wound on a tube within the stick proper. The earth spike may be removable from the base of the stick and reversible. The detector may, when in use, be plugged, into the side of the stick. Tuning may be effected by two relatively-adjustable coils, or by varying a capacity formed by two or more telescoping sections separated by insulation. The aerial may comprise a. metallized tape housed within the knob or elsewhere, and provided with an insulating ring at its free end by which it can be attached to a, tree or other support.
