Abstract
A power distribution unit contained in a metal enclosure 1 is removably installed into a standard 19" rack system 9, the enclosure 1 being provided with transparent inspection covers over terminals, circuit breakers, sockets, safety and control circuits with indication lamps. Uninterruptable power via a separate rack mounted UPS unit 11 or from a UPS located elsewhere is supplied to a miniature circuit breaker distribution board in the enclosure to supply power to computer equipment. The UPS can be by-passed by the circuit breakers and normal mains power supplied to the computer equipment miniature circuit 10 distribution board. Other electrical equipment is supplied from normal mains power via another separate miniature circuit breaker distribution board. <IMAGE>
Description
19" RACK MOUNTED POWER DISTRIBUTION UNIT
This invention relates to a 19" rack mounted power distribution unit.
Power distribution units are used in computer rooms to supply electrical power to each item of computer equipment via circuit breakers enclosed in a free standing metal cabinet or enclosure.
The power distribution units also contain power monitoring, indication and safety isolation devices and are specifically designed for each computer room installation.
According to the present invention there is provided a 19" wide metal enclosure with clear inspection covers over the electrical components which form a power distribution unit. The enclosure is removable and can be installed into a standard 19" rack system.
The 19" power distribution unit consists of an incoming power connection, main circuit breakers, supply circuit breakers to and from a separate uninterruptible power supply unit (UPS), a
UPS by-pass circuit breaker and two separate outgoing miniature circuit breaker distribution boards, one of which provides independent power to computers, and the other to any electrical equipment via sockets and terminals.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows the front perspective view of the 19" wide power distribution unit.
Figure 2 shows the rear perspective view of the 19" wide power distribution unit.
Figure 3 shows the power distribution unit in position in a standard 19" rack with the UPS unit.
Referring to the drawings, Fig 1, the rack mounted power distribution unit comprises a metal enclosure 1 with transparent inspection covers 2 over the electrical components. The main incoming and supply circuit breakers 3 are mounted on a metal plate set back from the two outgoing miniature circuit breaker distribution boards 4 also fixed to a metal plate. The lockable hinged door 5 contains an emergency isolation button and indication lamps 10 as shown in Fig 3. Gland plates 8, Fig 2, at the rear of the enclosure 1 provide means of securing the incoming and outgoing cables which connect to the pre-wired terminals 7.
Outgoing supplies can be plugged into sockets 6 or connected to terminals 7.
To install the power distribution unit 1 in any position in a standard 19" rack the front flange is secured by screws to the rack steelwork 9 as shown in Fig 3 with support at the rear (not shown).
Claims (3)
1. A power distribution unit to fit into a standard 19" rack and be removable. The unit comprises a metal enclosure with transparent inspection covers containing, terminals, circuit breakers, sockets, safety and control circuits with indication lamps.
2. A removable power distribution unit as claimed in claim 1 wherein the UPS can be connected to it to supply electrical equipment via the outgoing miniature circuit breaker distribution board.
3. A removable power distribution unit as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the UPS can be by passed and maintain power to the outgoing miniature circuit breaker distribution board.
