Abstract
A pay-and-display parking ticket issuing machine accepts currency or credit in user-selectable amounts and issues a ticket permitting parking for a time determined by the amount of currency or credit accepted. The machine may accept multi-denomination currency or may include means to enable a user-selectable amount to be deducted from a credit/debit card. The rates of charging for parking may vary for different times of the day or be non-linearly related to the amount of credit accepted and may be varied using a key-pad to program a microprocessor.
Description
PAY-AND-DISPLAY PARKING TICKET ISSUING MACHINE
This invention relates to pay-and-display parking ticket issuing machines.
Such machines accept currency in multiple denominations and issue a ticket showing a departure time which is usually an integral number of hours after the ticket issue time.
For simplicity's sake, these machines are usually of the no-change-given type, so that if currency is not to hand for the exact amount required for a selected or required parking time, the smallest amount next above the required amount which can be compiled from the available currency must be inserted, and the "change" forfeited, which not only causes annoyance to the user, but also encourages underpayment which, absent diligent warden attendance, represents a loss to the parking authority.
The present invention provides a ticket issuing machine which does not have these problems, despite retaining the simplicity of the no-change-given type of machine.
The invention comprises a pay-and-display parking ticket issuing machine accepting currency or credit in user-selectable amounts and issuing a ticket permitting parking for a time proportional to the amount of currency accepted.
The machine may comprise a currency accepting arrangement accepting and evaluating multi-denomination currency.
The machine may comprise credit or debit card accepting arrangement and having a user request parking time or fee entering arrangement automatically generating a credit card account debiting transaction procedure or debiting a debit card for the requisite fee.
The machine may comprise a microprocessor computing the parking time corresponding to a userselected amount of currency or credit in accordance with an algorithm or from a look-up table.
The machine may give a visible indication of parking time corresponding to currency accepted, or a visible indication of a charge against a credit or debit card and a corresponding parking time.
The machine may be adapted to a non-linear relationship between currency or credit and parking time, and may be adapted to different rates of charge for parking time according to time of day or day of week.
The machine may have key-accessed programming means adapted for presetting charging rates.
One embodiment of a pay-and-display parking ticket issuing machine according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which the single Figure is a block diagram.
The Figure illustrates a pay-and-display parking ticket issuing machine accepting currency or credit in user-selectable amounts and issuing a ticket permitting parking for a time proportional to the amount of currency accepted.
The machine comprises a currency accepting arrangement 11 accepting and evaluating multidenomination currency and/or a credit or debit card accepting arrangement 12 and having a user request parking time or fee entering arrangement 13, which may comprise a keypad or a rotary switch which can be turned against dial markings indicating the hours and minutes required. This arrangement 13, if it is a credit card accepting arrangement, may be free-standing, presenting a duplicate set voucher for signature, one voucher of the set being retained in the machine for later collection and onward transmission to the card company, or it may be connected to the card company's computer, in which case it may accept a PIN to authenticate the transaction. If the arrangement 12 is a debit card accepting arrangement, it will of course have a magnetic or other data modifying arrangement altering the data on the debit card according to the transaction.
The currency accepting arrangement 11 or the credit or debit card accepting arrangement 12 can be arranged to accept any user-predetermined amount of currency or credit, though desirably above a certain minimum and usually below a certain maximum. The currency accepting arrangement may as desired accept coins (but may be constructed so as not to accept very low denomination coins which would give rise to an uneconomic storage and collection requirement) and/or notes in any combination and to any value and allocate parking time proportional to the amount accepted.
The machine has the same freedom in regard to the credit or debit card accepting arrangement 12, so that it is no longer necessary to pay for two hours rather than one hour when the desired parking time is one hour and a quarter, or, as often happens, to pay for four hours rather than two when the desired time is two and a quarter hours.
The arrangements 11, 12 and 13 are connected to a microprocessor 14 which is programmed to convert the amount of currency or credit accepted into a permitted parking time and issue a windscreen display ticket which will bear the usual information but principally, of course, the last permitted departure time.
The time is computed according to an algorithm or from a look-up table. A simple algorithm might of course permit fifteen minutes parking for the smallest currency denomination accepted, which might be five pence. A more complicated arrangement would permit fifteen minutes for each five pence up to a total of an hour, then thirty minutes for each five pence. Or, if short-term parking were to be encouraged or long-term parking discouraged, the parking time for the second hour might be reduced to seven and a half minutes per five pence unit and one minute for each five pence for the third and subsequent hours.
A key-access key-pad or other input 15 is provided on which charging rates, algorithms or look-up tables can be changed by the car park'operator, and this may be used for example, together with a timing arrangement associated with the microprocessor 14 to set different rates for different hours of the day and different days of the week.
A visual display unit 16 can show the time of day (and, if desired, the day of the week) and the amount of currency accepted, or the amount of credit debited from the credit or debit card in accordance with the user-entry into the request entering arrangement 13 and permitted parking time or exit time. A ticketissuing printer 17 completes the arrangement.
