Abstract

A showertray of twin sheet construction, comprises a showertray 10 and a support liner 11 both of which wherein the processes of thermoforming of the two sheets and of welding of the two sheets together are carried out simultaneously as one operation. Features such as base board can be integrated into the construction. <IMAGE>

Description

TWIN SHEET FORMED PLASTIC SHOWERTRAY (TSFP SHOWERTRAY) This invention relates to showertray design, construction and manufacture.
Showertrays currently available in the market place are of 2 main manufacturing methods.
A) Showertrays thermoformed from single or multilayer thermoplastic sheet which is reinforced by application of a reactive polymer based foam system layer. This process (RIM) reaction injection moulding involves the tray form being enclosed to one side of a cavity between male/female moulds and the remaining cavity being filled by injected PU foam.
B) Showertrays thermoformed from single or multlayer thermoplastic sheet which is reinforced by fitting a separately moulded polystyrene support.
These 2 methods have the follow drawbacks which are causing the showertray manufacturers to search for alternatives.
A) Reinforcement by RIM is a subsequent operation which requires complex, expensive capital equipment and has a long process time and consequently is very expensive. Also scrap products cannot be reprocessed.
B) Reinforcement by polystyrene support moulding is a separate operation which requires complex, expensive capital equipment and has long process time and consequently is very expensive.
According to the present invention - The showertray consists of a twin sheet thermoforming construction, were the normal tray together with a support liner are thermoformed and welded together simultaneously, to comprise a one piece assembly.
- Features such as a base board can be integrated in the construction.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows a plan view for the showertray and support liner assembly in trimmed condition ready for installation.
Figure 2 is a section view showing the configuration of the support liner and its relationship to the showertray.
Figure 3 is a detailed section view showing the relationship of tray and support liner forms and particularly the weld areas.
Referring to the drawing, two individual thermoplastic sheets have been simultaneously thermoformed and welded together by application of a combined twin sheet/pressure/vacuum thermoforming process to comprise one twin sheet showertray assembly.
The showertray 10 has been thermoformed from the upper sheet onto a male mould, and the support liner 11 has been thermoformed from the lower sheet into a female mould as the two moulds are closing.
At final closing, a pressure is applied achieving a weld at the designated areas 12,13,14, and 15.
A flat welded area for waste hole 15 is produced for fitment of same.
A non-slip pattern 16 when desired is formed in the tray base coinciding to the weld areas.
Cavity links 17 are formed in the weld areas to allow venting, so preventing air pressure variation when the tray base is heated and cooled in service.
Surplus sheet material 18 at the rim is trimmed.

Claims (6)

1. A TSFP showertray consists of a twin sheet thermoformed construction, were the showertray together with a support liner are thermoformed and welded together simultaneously.
2. A TSFP showertray as claimed in claim 1 wherein twin sheets consist of similar or non-similar thermoplastic sheet compositions.
3. A TSFP showertray as claimed in claims 1 and 2 wherein each tray and support liner assembly is produced in one operation in one machine cycle.
4. A TSFP showertray as claimed in claims 1,2 and 3 wherein the weld areas provide all necessary strength, requiring no further reinforcement materials or reinforcement operations.
5. A TSFP showertray as claimed in any previous claim wherein such features as base board can be integrated to the forms.
6. A TSFP showertray substantially as described herein with reference to figure 1-3 of the accompanying drawing.
