Description

TRANSACTION RECORDING SYSTEM This invention relates to a recording system for recording customer transactions.
It has become the practice in betting shops to make copies of betting slips for security purposes. Thus, a betting slip which has been date and time stamped and printed with a code number identifying the transaction may be passed beneath a fixed camera with which a photograph of the slip is taken before it is issued to the customer.
An object of the present invention is to utilise such a known system for the monitoring of persons.
According to the invention therefore there is provided a recording system for use in making a copy of a transaction-recording element dispensed to a customer, said system comprising image recording apparatus mounted relative to an element-dispensing zone for making a recording of an image of a dispensed said element, characterised in that said apparatus is also adapted for making a recording of an image of a person in the vicinity of said zone.
With this arrangement it is possible to take a picture of a customer as well as a picture of the transaction-recording element dispensed to the customer. In this way security can be much enhanced in so far as record is made not only of the transaction element but also of the customer to whom the element is dispensed. In the event that there is any suggestion of fraud or any dispute e.g. as to the ownership of a transaction-recording element, there is the possibility of resolving this by checking the recorded person image.
The arrangement may be such that the image of the person is recorded on each occasion on which a transaction-recording element is dispensed. Alternatively, the arrangement may be such that the person image is recorded only on some occasions, e.g. when the transaction in question exceeds a predetermined value or is of a predetermined kind.
The operation of the image recording apparatus is preferably of an automatic nature with regard to the recording of the element image.
Thus, the apparatus may be linked- for control purposes to a device which generates or dispenses or detects the generation or dispense of the transaction-recording element so that the element image is recorded automatically as the element is generated or dispensed.
The operation of the image recording apparatus may also be of an automatic nature with regard to the recording of the person image.
Thus, the apparatus may be arranged to record the person image at a predetermined time or stage in relation to the generation or dispensing of the transaction-recording element e.g. as initiated by virtue of the connection of the apparatus to the aforementioned device. Alternatively or additionally, automatic recording of the person image may be initiated in response to sensing of the person at a particular position.
It is however to be understood that the invention is not restricted to automatic operation of the image-recording apparatus and if desired a manual control may be provided for initiating image-recording of the element or of the person or both.
The transaction-recording element may be of any suitable nature and may be used for any suitable purpose. Thus, the element may be a ticket or slip or the like on which information relating to a financial transaction is printed. In one embodiment, the financial transaction is a bet placed in a betting establishment. However, the invention may also apply to other financial transactions such as customer purchases in shops, deposits or withdrawals made in banks, etc. The invention may also apply to non-financial transactions.
Where a printed slip is used and the operation of the image recording apparatus is automatic as mentioned above, the said device which is used to control the automatic operation may comprise printing equipment which prints on the slip, or associated equipment such as keyboard equipment, computer equipment etc. used to input or to generate the information to be printed. Alternatively the said device used to control the automatic operation may be a device associated with the dispensing movement of the slip. For example the said device may comprise a drive mechanism which advances the printed slip to the dispense zone or a sensor which detects presence of the slip in the dispense zone.
With regard to the image recording apparatus, the same apparatus may be used to record an image of the element as is used to record the person image. Thus, the apparatus may comprise a camera which can record images in two different zones, namely the dispense zone, and the adjacent zone occupied by the person, this being achieved by appropriately moving the camera, or by moving associated devices such as mirrors. The camera may be a photographic camera, or a video camera. It is however to be understood that multiple cameras can be used if desired.
After recordal, the images may be stored in any suitable manner and if desired the recorded images may be identified so that a person image can be related to a corresponding element image. Such identification may be achieved by an inprinted code number or the like. Alternatively sufficient identification may be achieved by virtue of the relative positions of the images in sequences of images, e.g. in that corresponding images are next to each other on a single recording medium, or in that corresponding images are at corresponding positions on separate recording media.
Where automatic image recording is effected as mentioned above, provision may be made for overriding or supplementing or modifying this whereby as desired it may be possible to prevent the recording of an image, or to manually effect the recording of an image, or to make multiple recordings of an image.
Provision may also be made for using the system of the invention for surveillance purposes whereby the image recording apparatus operates to record images of persons when an unauthorised event occurs as signified by operation of a manual alarm control or as detected by an appropriate sensor or sensors. Thus, the apparatus may be operated to record person images where there is unauthorised entry into premises or a room where the system is located, or there is an attempt made to tamper with the system or with associated equipment (such as a till or safe or the like).
The invention will now be described further by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- Fig 1 is a diagrammatic part-sectioned perspective view of one form of a system according to the invention; and Figs 2 & 3 are similar perspective views to a smaller scale showing different stages of operation of the system.
With reference to the drawings, Fig. 1 shows image-recording appartus for use in a betting establishment.
The apparatus is contained in a cylindrical housing 1 which is mounted in vertical disposition on a counter 2. The housing 1 is mounted on short legs 3 so that there is a small gap 4 between the bottom of the housing 1 and the counter 2. There are driven rollers (not shown) set into the counter 2 beneath the housing 1, and also rollers (not shown) in the bottom of the housing 1. These rollers define nips by means of which a betting slip can be driven through the aforementioned gap 4 from the rear of the counter to a dispense zone at the front of the counter where a customer can pick up the slip.
Within the housing 1 there is located a downwardly directed video camera 5 connected to video recording apparatus (not shown), and a mirror 6 positioned between the camera 5 and the bottom of the housing 1. The bottom of the housing 1 is open so that the camera 5 is capable of taking a picture of a betting slip 7 located within the above mentioned gap 4, when the line of vision of the camera.5 is not obstructed by the mirror 6.
The side walls of the housing 1 are opaque except for a forwardly facing transparent panel 8 generally at eye7level and behind which the mirror 6 is located.
The mirror 6 is pivotally mounted and is connected to a motor-operated cam drive 9 so that the mirror 6 can be moved between an upright, retracted position (as shown in Fig. 1) in which it does not obstruct the line of vision of the camera 5, and a forwardly inclined position in which it intercepts the line of vision of the camera 5 such that a picture can be taken on a horizontal line of vision through the front panel 8.
The camera 5 and the drive 9 are connected to powered control circuitry and there is a press button behind the counter 2.
In use, when a bet is placed by a customer, a slip 7 is printed (in equipment not shown) with information relating to the transaction (e.g. time, date, and transaction code).
The operator, before passing the slip to the customer presses the button behind the counter. This causes the mirror 6 to pivot forwardly and the camera 5 operates to take a picture of the customer.
The operator then feeds the slip 7 into engagement with the nip rollers in the gap 4. The slip 7 is automatically driven to a position in which it is centred beneath the open bottom of the housing 1. The drive 9 then stops, the mirror 6 is pivoted back to the retracted vertical position, and the camera 5 operates to take a picture of the slip. The drive 9 is then again actuated so that the slip 7 is dispensed to the customer.
The picture of the slip 7 and the picture of the person are stored in succession on video tape and can be retrieved as required and played back on conventional video-player apparatus.
The system so far described can also be used for surveillance purposes. Thus, the operator can operate the camera 5 to take a picture of a person infront of the counter at any time, for example if there is an' attempted robbery. Also the system may have an automatic mode in which it is connected to a sensor or sensors whereby a picture is taken automatically if there is an attempted break-in to the premises or if there is an attempt made to tamper with the system or with other equipment near to the system.
It is of course to be understood that the invention is not intended to be restricted to the details of the above embodiment which are described by way of example only.
