Abstract

A support for holding a hinged door consisting of two brackets 3 and 4 which engage the top and bottom of the door and a door frame, or a cabinet 2. The brackets 3 and 4 enable the door to be held securely in the correct, chosen position while the holes for the door hinges are marked or formed in the frame. The brackets may be coupled by an adjustable member 6. In a modified arrangement a top bracket adjustably clamps to the door and engages the inside top of a door frame and additional lower brackets between the bottom of the door and frame adjustably clamp the door. <IMAGE>

Description

DOOR SUPPORT This invention relates to a door support.
Mounting doors on door frames or on cabinets can be a problem especially for the amateur when working alone. The door needs to be supported temporarily while the holes in the frame for the hinges are aligned, before screwing the hinges into place.
It is an object of the present invention to provide apparatus for aiding a person in mounting or hanging doors within frames.
According to the present invention there is provided a door support in the form of a bracket for temporarily locating a door within a door frame before mounting the door within the frame.
The bracket preferably comprises two brackets mounted top and bottom of the door with an adjustable connecting member between the brackets. Locating means preferably in the form of a jamming screw are provided on each bracket for locating the brackets on a frame. The brackets can first be mounted on the frame and then the door can be mounted on the brackets or vice versa.
If the door is mounted on a cabinet or any other such furniture then the bracket is preferably mounted on the outside of the door frame, on top and below the bottom of the cabinet respectively.
If the door is mounted within a conventional door frame in a wall then the mounting bracket is preferably jammed between the door and the inside of the door frame.
The brackets are preferably made from extruded or moulded plastics material or from any other suitable material such as metal, for example, from pressed steal.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a first embodiment of door support in use; Figure 2 is a perspective view of a second embodiment of the door support; Figure 3 is a perspective view of a third embodiment of door support; in use Figure 4 is a side view of the support of Figure 3; Figure 5 is a front view of the support of Figure 3; Figure 6 is a perspective view of supports for use in conjunction with the support of Figure 3; and Figure 7 is a plan view of the supports of Figure 6.
Figure 1 shows a door support 1 in use on a cabinet 2. The support 1 comprises two brackets 3, 4 mounted top and bottom of the door respectively with an adjustable connecting member 6 joining the brackets 3, 4 together. The brackets 3, 4 each have an adjusting screw 7 for locating the brackets on the outside frame of the cabinet 2.
Figure 2 shows a similar alternative embodiment of door support to that in figure 1. A door (not shown) is positioned in use between two brackets 11, 12 in such a way that the top and bottom of the door are placed between two upstanding members 13, 14 on each bracket 11, 12. The connecting member 16 is then adjusted in length by screws 17, 18 at either end of the member 16 so that the brackets 13, 14 are clamped to the door. The door is then lifted into position and adjusting screws 19, 21 having lock nuts 22, 23 are used to clamp the whole door to the cabinet. Once the door is in position screw holes for the hinges can be made and the door can be screwed to the cabinet.
Figures 3, 4 and 5 show a further embodiment of door support 30 in use with a conventional door 31, within a frame in a wall (not shown). Adjusting screws 32, 33 having lock nuts 34, 36 are provided for the support 30, set orthogonally to each other on a bracket 37.
The horizontally aligned adjusting screw 32 is used to clamp the bracket 37 to the door 31 and the vertically aligned adjusting screw 33 is used to jam the bracket within the door frame.
Figures 6 and 7 show two brackets 40, 41 for use on the same door 31. The brackets 40, 41 are used to support the bottom of the door 31 by adjusting screws 42 set horizontally on the brackets 40, 41, with each having a lock nut 43, to clamp the door 31 in a raised position off the floor.
With the door clamped into position it is easy to screw hinges on the door 31 to the frame in order to hang the door 31.
Various further modifications may be made within the scope of the present invention, for example, the adjusting screws may be provided with rubber or cork pads for contact with the door, and the connecting member 6 may be made from a threaded plastics rod.

CLAIMS:
1. A door support for temporarily supporting a door relative to a hinged door frame to facilitate marking or drilling holes for the hinges in the frame, the support comprising an adjustable bracket for each of both the top and bottom of the door which fit in the adjustable positions to the door and to the frame in a manner to allow the door to be selectively moved into the required position relative to the frame so that the holes in the frame can be marked and/or drilled.
2. A door support according to Claim 1 including a connecting member having an adjustable effective length which in use joins the top and bottom bracket together.
3. A door support according to Claim 1 or 2, including one or more additional adjustable support brackets arranged to fit under the bottom edge of the door, remote from the hinged side of the door, to additionally hold the door up while the marking and/or drilling is carried out.
4. Door supports substantially as herein described with reference to any one or more of Figs. 1 to 7 of the accompanying drawings.
